The Toyota bZ, older Toyota bZ4X, and Subaru Solterra have officially been granted access to the Tesla Supercharger network in North America, opening up access to more than 25,000 DC fast charging stations in the United States and Canada. 2026 models come with NACS ports from the factory and support Plug & Charge, while 2023–2025 models require an adapter and do not have Plug & Charge.

Supercharger Access: Differences Between 2026 and 2023–2025

The switch to the NACS connector standard has significantly reduced friction for Toyota and Subaru users when fast charging. However, the experience varies significantly by model:

  • 2026 (Toyota bZ, Subaru Solterra): Built-in NACS charging port, plugs directly into Supercharger. Supports Plug & Charge when users have set up payments in the Toyota or SubaruConnect app.
  • 2023–2025 (Toyota bZ4X, Subaru Solterra): Vehicles using CCS1 port require a CCS1–NACS adapter to connect to the Supercharger. Plug & Charge is not supported, the owner must initiate a charging session via card or phone app.

NACS Adapter: Toyota and Subaru policies

The adapter policy is what makes the experience different between the two Japanese brands in the old car group:

  • Toyota bZ4X 2023–2025: Toyota confirmed that it will provide a free NACS adapter. Starting in November, the company will send a letter instructing owners to contact their dealer to receive it.
  • 2023–2025 Subaru Solterra: Owners will need to purchase a certified NACS adapter, expected to be available this fall.

For the 2026 model year, Toyota electric vehicles will come with standard adapters for J1772 (Levels 1 & 2) and CCS2; the 2026 Subaru Solterra will also come with adapters for J1772 and CCS, according to the announcement.

Plug & Charge: simplified payment process

The Plug & Charge feature on 2026 models simplifies charging station operations. With a pre-configured payment method in the Toyota or SubaruConnect app, users simply plug in the charging cable, the charging session starts automatically and charges automatically, no card swiping or manual information entry required.

Quick comparison table of charging configurations

Car model Vehicle life Car charging port Adapter for using Supercharger Plug & Charge Notes/Policies
Toyota bZ 2026 NACS Not required when using Supercharger Have Comes with standard adapter for J1772 (Level 1 & 2) and CCS2
Subaru Solterra 2026 NACS Not required when using Supercharger Have Comes with adapter for J1772 and CCS
Toyota bZ4X 2023–2025 CCS1 CCS1–NACS adapter required Are not Toyota offers free NACS adapter; instructions available from November
Subaru Solterra 2023–2025 CCS1 CCS1–NACS adapter required Are not Vehicle owners purchase certified NACS adapters themselves, expected to be available this fall

Real-world experience: less work, more reliability

The integration of NACS and Plug & Charge in the 2026 eliminates the need to carry an adapter and navigate through an app every time you fast charge. Users can expect a streamlined process, reduced risk of connection errors due to intermediary adapters, and the wide coverage of the Supercharger network in the US and Canada.

For 2023–2025 vehicles, the adapter is still the “ticket of entry.” The difference in policy (Toyota gives it away for free, Subaru makes it available to owners) directly impacts cost of ownership and availability. Even without Plug & Charge, using an app/card to initiate a charging session ensures network access.

Market impact and standardization process

Toyota and Subaru’s decision to join the Supercharger network is a milestone in the process of moving toward a unified charging standard in North America. They are late to the transition, while other major brands like BMW and Volkswagen are still on the waiting list for access, according to Tesla’s website (via InsideEVs).

A quick look at the highlights

  • Access the official Supercharger for Toyota bZ/bZ4X, Subaru Solterra in North America.
  • Generation 2026: integrated NACS port, supports Plug & Charge.
  • Generation 2023–2025: requires CCS1–NACS adapter, no Plug & Charge.
  • Toyota offers a free adapter for the 2023–2025 bZ4X; 2023–2025 Solterra requires purchase of certified adapter.

Overall, the transition to NACS and opening up Supercharger access provides direct benefits to the charging experience for Toyota and Subaru owners, especially evident on 2026 models.
