According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, recently, people have reported a clear increase in traffic jams, especially in the central area and gateways during rush hours after the city expanded its boundaries. On the afternoon of November 6, at the Ho Chi Minh City Press Center, Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee's Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department Duong Anh Duc and Deputy Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee's Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department Tang Huu Phong chaired a meeting to inform about the traffic situation in the area.

At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Kien Giang , Head of the Department of Traffic Works Maintenance and Operation, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, said that after the merger with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, the traffic volume from localities into the city increased sharply, leading to great pressure on gateway routes. Accordingly, the number of vehicles from Binh Duong and Vung Tau pouring into Ho Chi Minh City during rush hours has increased dramatically, causing prolonged congestion on many main routes.

According to Mr. Giang, there are 6 main reasons why traffic in Ho Chi Minh City is facing many difficulties. Specifically, the traffic infrastructure has not kept up with the growth rate of population and the number of vehicles is the biggest cause. Many roads have small cross-sections, intersections have not been synchronously renovated, and there is a lack of public parking, causing increasing pressure on the road system. In addition, in the city, there are many infrastructure projects under construction such as intersections, overpasses, road expansions, etc., which narrow the traffic space, creating "bottlenecks" in some key areas. The situation of trading and encroachment on sidewalks and roads is still complicated, directly affecting the speed of traffic.

In addition, traffic accidents and technical problems with vehicles that have not been resolved promptly, along with the limited awareness of traffic laws among some people, have contributed to increasing local congestion.

The Eastern gateway area often has local traffic jams during rush hour.

In the immediate future, to resolve the traffic congestion at the gateways, Ho Chi Minh City will focus on implementing solutions to clear bottlenecks, prioritizing important infrastructure projects at the gateways. Specifically, the City is accelerating the progress of 4 BOT projects on National Highway 1 (section through Binh Chanh), National Highway 22, National Highway 13 and the North-South axis (Nguyen Huu Tho Street); at the same time, urgently completing key intersections such as An Phu, My Thuy, Tan Van; deploying Lien Phuong Road, Song Hanh National Highway 50, Ring Road 3 and Tham Luong - Ben Cat route.

In the long term, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction will coordinate with units to advise the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to develop a plan to develop the transport system for the period 2026 - 2030; report on the investment plan for the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line connecting Long Thanh airport; prepare to implement 9 urban railway projects; and at the same time promote public transport and smart transport applications (IoT) to reduce dependence on personal vehicles.
