(NADS) - Despite spending more than 600 billion VND to renovate the Nuoc Den canal (Binh Tan district) in 2022, it is now "flooded" with garbage and a foul smell, seriously affecting people's lives.

The Black Water Canal (Binh Tan District), one of Ho Chi Minh City’s major renovation projects, is still facing a serious risk of re-pollution after only two years of renovation. Household waste and water hyacinth are accumulating densely in the canal, causing the risk of infection and overwhelming odor.

All kinds of trash from foam to nylon, plastic,... things that are difficult to decompose

Especially, when Ho Chi Minh City is about to enter the rainy season, this place becomes even more frightening because of insects, flies, mosquitoes, etc. that breed and carry dangerous pathogens.

This looks more like a "garbage dump" than a canal.

About 500m of the Black Water Canal section intersecting with the Tham Luong Canal section has now become a hot spot for garbage congestion with all kinds of garbage from plastic bottles, boxes, water hyacinths...

A section of the Black Water Canal intersecting with the Tham Luong Canal is congested and clogged with garbage and water hyacinth.

According to the reflection of people in the area, shared: "Our lives are threatened by the stench, flies, and mosquitoes. Although the canal has been renovated, the pollution continues."

Despite efforts from authorities and local leaders, the Black Water Canal has yet to be completely cleaned after two years of renovation.

Without garbage, the water would still be "black" and smelly.

In addition, illegal dumping still occurs along both banks of the canal, despite prohibition signs and a camera system for penalties.

Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Binh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Hung Hoa Ward, Binh Tan District, informed: "We have taken measures such as mobilizing people to collect trash and coordinating with relevant units to solve the problem. However, the problem still requires strong cooperation from the community to effectively overcome it."

The garbage congestion on the Nuoc Den canal is not only a problem of one area but also a big challenge for the whole of Ho Chi Minh City. Specific and effective measures are needed to solve this situation, in order to protect the environment and public health.
