(Dan Tri) - On the evening of December 8, Thailand won 10-0 against Timor Leste in the first match of Group A of the 2024 AFF Cup. Is this the biggest score in the history of the AFF Cup?

In the opening match of the AFF Cup 2024 at Hang Day Stadium on the evening of December 8, Thailand created a devastating performance against Timor Leste when winning 10-0. This resounding victory helped the "War Elephants" temporarily top Group A.

According to statistics, this is the biggest victory in the history of Thai football, equaling their current record when they defeated Brunei with a score of 10-0 in 1971. On the other hand, Timor Leste also suffered the biggest defeat in history, equaling the record of losing 0-10 to Saudi Arabia in 2015.

However, in the history of the AFF Cup, Thailand's 10-0 victory over Timor Leste is not the biggest. Instead, Indonesia holds the record when it crushed the Philippines with a score of 13-1 in the 2002 tournament.

Bambang Pamungkas and Zaenal Arief both scored four goals in the match. Indonesia advanced to the next round with a 13-1 win over the Philippines. They reached the final of that tournament but were defeated 2-4 by Thailand in the penalty shootout.

The second biggest win was when Singapore defeated Laos 11-0 in the 2007 AFF Cup. That was the match in which Noh Alam Shah scored 7 goals. The former player also holds the record for most goals scored in a single AFF Cup match. Noh Alam Shah was also a key factor in helping Singapore win the tournament.

In the top 5 biggest wins, the Vietnamese team also occupies two positions. In 2007, we defeated Laos with a score of 9-0. Before that, in the 2004 tournament, the "Golden Star Warriors" also defeated Cambodia with a score of 9-1.

At 8:00 p.m. today (December 9), the Vietnamese team will play against Laos in the 2024 AFF Cup. Meanwhile, Indonesia will face Myanmar.

5 biggest winning margins in AFF Cup history:

1. Indonesia 13 - 1 Philippines (2002)

2. Singapore 11 - 0 Laos (2007)

3. Thailand 10-0 Timor Leste (2024)

4. Vietnam 9 - 0 Laos (2007)

5. Vietnam 9 - 1 Cambodia (2004)
