The number of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Lang Son has been increasing in recent years, becoming a matter of great concern to society. Early care and intervention is not only a hope, but also the “golden key” to help children with ASD improve their health, integrate into the community and have a brighter future.
According to statistics as of May 2025, Lang Son province has over 188,000 children, over 1,800 of whom have disabilities. Of these, the number of autistic children, children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and children with developmental delays accounts for about 20%.
Recognizing signs of autism spectrum disorder in children
Autistic disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication, language, social interaction, and behavior. Each autistic child has different characteristics and levels of expression of the disorder. Some children may have difficulty communicating and speaking, while others have difficulty understanding social interactions such as eye contact or gestures, repetitive actions and speech, or being overly focused on a particular interest are also common signs in children with autism. Although the exact cause has not been clearly identified, many scientific studies show that genetic and environmental factors are the two main factors leading to autism in children.
Children can be at risk of developing ASD at any stage, but symptoms usually begin to become apparent in the first 2-3 years of life, especially between 12 and 24 months of age. Therefore, it is important for parents to detect early signs of ASD in their children during this period to help their children receive timely intervention, thereby quickly making progress and supporting their children to integrate better.
Early intervention and treatment
In the province today, besides the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital, there are also special education centers that actively receive, evaluate and provide intervention for children such as: Lang Son Starlight Center (Tam Thanh Ward); Phuc Tam An Special Education and Speech Therapy Center (Dong Kinh Ward); Kazuo Center for Supporting the Development of Inclusive Education (Dong Kinh Ward)... Thereby, providing a specialized learning environment, suitable for the needs and conditions of each child with ASD.
Established in 2017, as one of the first centers for special education in the province, Lang Son Starlight Center (under Starlight Special Education Company Limited) is intervening for more than 70 children from 2 to 14 years old. The company currently has 8 employees and 20 teachers working at 3 facilities in Tam Thanh ward, Dong Dang commune, and Van Quan commune.
Ms. Nong Thi Lieu, Director of Anh Sao Special Education Company Limited, said: In order to do a good job of special education for children with disabilities in the province, the company has prepared well in terms of human resources, facilities, and equipment. Specifically, the teaching staff are all well-trained in special education, psychology, and early intervention skills, so they have solid expertise. The company has a full range of functional rooms such as: exercise room, consultation and assessment room, individual/group intervention room, along with software to support children with disabilities, specialized equipment and learning materials suitable for each type of disorder and the needs of the children. In addition, the company coordinates with experts in psychology, special education, and a team of central-level psychiatry doctors to improve the quality of intervention, helping children progress quickly.
Not only Lang Son Starlight Center, Kazuo Center for Supporting the Development of Inclusive Education (Dong Kinh Ward) is also an address trusted by many parents. Established in 2020, the center currently has 32 managers, teachers, and staff, receiving, caring for, and educating more than 80 children with autism spectrum disorders in the form of boarding and individual intervention, aged from 18 months to 15 years old. In the past 3 years, more than 200 children have successfully intervened at the center, the rate of successful intervention according to each individual's capacity reaching over 80%.
Behind each small step of progress of children is the dedication and tireless efforts of special education teachers. Ms. Hoang Huu Van, a teacher who has worked for 5 years at Kazuo Center for Supporting the Development of Inclusive Education, expressed: In the process of caring for and intervening for children with ASD, we also encountered some difficulties such as an intervention content that had to be repeated many times for children to remember or had to combine behavior management because many children were not cooperative, had opposing actions... However, for me, being a teacher in the field of special education is a journey of the heart, patience, love for children and passion for the profession. When seeing children make progress, each teacher feels more motivated to love and be more attached to the profession, more passionate on the journey with children to integrate into the community.
In addition to intervention at specialized facilities and centers, families play a key role in the journey to support children with ASD. Fortunately, many parents in Lang Son have raised awareness, put aside the initiative to seek information and take their children for intervention as soon as they notice unusual signs in their children's development. Ms. NTH (Dinh Lap commune) has a nearly 5-year-old grandson diagnosed with ASD, saying: When he was 2 years old and still could not speak, the family took him to the Lang Son Anh Sao Center for examination and intervention. After 3 years of intervention, with the dedication of the teachers, he was able to say single words or 4-word phrases, express his wishes and thoughts through actions.
At the same time, taking care of children at home also helps children progress quickly. Ms. LTĐ (Tam Thanh ward), whose child is undergoing intervention at the Kazuo Center for Supporting the Development of Inclusive Education for autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, confided: At home, I spend time reinforcing my child's knowledge according to the plan and video lessons provided by the center, patiently teaching and correcting my child's mistakes many times. Thanks to that, my child has made remarkable progress.
According to incomplete statistics, in the past 3 years, more than 600 children with autism spectrum disorder in the province have been admitted, intervened and have made good progress and integration. This is a clear demonstration of the strength of perseverance, love of the family along with the efforts and love for the profession of the team of managers and teachers directly intervening for children with autism spectrum disorder.
We believe that with the cooperation of families, facilities, special education centers, authorities and the whole society, children with autism will have a good living and educational environment, helping them develop their full potential and soon integrate into the community. The care, concern and practical actions of parents will be the key to opening the doors of hope for these special "seeds".
