Honoring outstanding blood donors is an event organized annually by the Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation to express gratitude, acknowledge and praise those who are willing to share their precious blood with patients with the motto "Living is giving, not just receiving for oneself".

Blood donation "leader"

From a voluntary blood donor, Mr. Tran Quoc Viet (born in 1984, Tam Nghia commune, Nui Thanh) has connected and built a blood donation community with thousands of participants.

The fanpage “ Quang Nam Hot Blood Club” managed by him and a number of other people has so far attracted more than 2,800 members. Over the past 5 years, club members have directly donated thousands of units of blood, helping to save the lives of many patients.

We met Tran Quoc Viet when he had just completed donating platelets to a patient at Quang Nam Central General Hospital (located in Nui Thanh District). Viet said this was his 22nd platelet donation, since the first time in 2008.

“The first time I donated blood was at the hospital when I heard that a patient needed emergency blood. After that, I participated more regularly and got to know many blood donors. In 2020, I created this community page with the desire to connect and bring emergency blood donations into order, avoiding spontaneous and ineffective activities,” Viet shared.

According to Mr. Viet, the administrator of the blood donation community page, in addition to him, there are 3 other people. Normally, when there is a need for blood, the hospital will encourage family members to donate blood first, if not guaranteed, they will give the phone numbers of the club's administrators so that the family can call for help.

When the patient's information is available, the Club will promptly notify members to proactively register at any time. In urgent cases such as accidents or emergencies, the hospital often calls the Club directly to manage and provide timely blood support.

On the fanpage “Quang Nam Hot Blood Club”, along with other members, despite his busy work, Mr. Viet still regularly manages the club’s activities, regulating blood donations in a timely and scientific manner . He also actively participates in other social charity activities such as mobilizing to help people in difficult circumstances during holidays; participating in organizing free meals for poor patients…

“I think that when society needs me, I can sacrifice a little bit to make my life more meaningful. I will donate blood until I no longer have the chance,” said Viet.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dau, a member of the “Quang Nam Hot Blood Club” with nearly 40 blood donations, said: “Mr. Viet is an enthusiastic person, always devoted to the community and patients. He has spent a lot of time on charity and humanitarian work, especially managing blood donation activities at the Club.”

To live is to give…

With 15 years of working in the Youth Union, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam - Secretary of the Youth Union of Binh Quy Commune (Thang Binh) has donated blood 31 times. He considers donating blood as a very normal thing, like a regular activity.

Mr. Tam said that his wife was previously in charge of the Red Cross and women's work in the commune. The couple had registered to donate blood many times at events organized by the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation in Thang Binh District. Mr. Tam himself had donated blood many times at hospitals whenever he received information that a patient needed blood.

“I remember that I donated blood directly at the hospital about 9 times. One time, it was almost 11 pm, it was a rainy and cold winter day, I received a call from Quang Nam General Hospital (Tam Ky City) that there was a patient in need of emergency blood, I ran in to donate blood alone. After donating blood, when I got home, it was already a new day, although I was quite tired, I felt happy because I thought I had just done something useful” - Tam said.

Mr. Tam is currently a member of the Tu Tam Nhien Hot Blood Club. As an active youth leader, in addition to donating blood, he also actively promotes and mobilizes youth union members and people in the commune to donate blood.

“We promote and spread voluntary blood donation in many forms, especially through social networks. Thanks to that, people's awareness and the number of blood donors are increasing, many people have proactively proposed to join "hot" blood donation groups. Through blood donation, I often think "living is giving, not just receiving". I also set a goal for myself to donate 2-4 units of blood each year. I think the happiness of this "giving" is that the recipient of blood will live and be healthy" - Mr. Tam shared.

Spread the movement

According to Mr. Le Tan Minh - Chairman of the Provincial Red Cross Association, Deputy Head of the Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, the voluntary blood donation movement in Quang Nam has achieved many outstanding results, with the amount of blood received annually reaching and exceeding the target assigned by the Central Government.

For example, in 2024, the whole province promoted and mobilized the receipt of 19,179 units of blood (reaching 125% of the assigned target). In the first 6 months of 2025, the whole province mobilized and received 9,552 units of blood (reaching 131% of the assigned target). The above results have contributed to ensuring the need for blood for emergency and treatment at hospitals.

The Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation said that by the end of 2024, the province had established 224 blood donation clubs with 6,746 members to ensure a stable blood supply for patients. Of these, there were 130 reserve blood donation clubs with 5,465 members, 29 "Club 25" with 725 members, 30 family blood donation clubs with 241 members, and 35 voluntary blood donation clubs with 315 members. According to reports from hospitals in the province, in 2024, there were 3,235 units of blood supported by live blood banks and family members.

“Through implementation, the blood donation movement has received close attention and direction from Party committees and authorities at all levels; the coordination of departments, branches, sectors, the Fatherland Front, and mass organizations; the efforts and responsibility of the Steering Committees at all levels in propaganda and mobilization of voluntary blood donation. The movement has great cooperation from the community, especially the kindness of blood donors to bring life and heartbeat to patients” - Mr. Minh.

According to Mr. Le Tan Minh, currently, more and more individuals and families are actively participating in the voluntary blood donation movement with the number of times and the amount of blood donated increasing over time. Notably, many people have donated blood dozens of times, demonstrating a sense of responsibility and noble humanity.

In addition to propaganda work, the steering committees at all levels focus on expanding the sustainable blood donation force, building live blood banks to proactively respond to necessary situations, ensuring that there is always blood available to save patients. Continue to innovate mobilization methods, apply technology, strengthen coordination with other sectors to make voluntary blood donation activities more professional and effective. At the same time, promptly honor, reward and encourage individuals and families with many outstanding achievements in voluntary blood donation, thereby replicating the model, creating a strong spread in the community...

Outstanding examples of compassion

On the occasion of the International Blood Donor Day, June 14, 2025, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Anh Tuan - Head of the Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation sent a "Thank You Letter" to groups, families and individuals who have made many positive contributions to this movement. At the same time, he acknowledged, praised and highly appreciated the sentiments and responsibilities of all levels and sectors, especially the noble gesture of donating blood to save lives of volunteers.

“You are exemplary examples of compassion, spreading and sharing love and responsibility to the community and society. For a healthy and humane society, I call on all walks of life to continue to actively participate in donating blood to save lives and mobilize everyone to donate blood, contributing to the cause of protecting and caring for people's health” - excerpt from the Thank You Letter.
