Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Thi Phuong Thuy (left cover), Deputy Director of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (TVU) discussed with experts about the hydroponic vegetable growing model at Con Chim.
Hydroponic vegetable growing is a method of growing vegetables that does not require a large area of land. Vegetables are grown on a substrate and directly absorb hydroponic nutrients to grow and develop. This is a method of growing vegetables that is highly effective, saves space and is easy to care for. The outstanding advantage of the model is that it adapts to climate change and is not affected by saline intrusion.
According to Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Bich, Deputy Director of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, Tra Vinh University (TVU), the unit directly involved in implementing the Project, the main objective of the Project is to support hydroponic vegetable farmers to adapt to climate change and saline intrusion, thereby contributing to protecting sustainable livelihoods and developing agriculture in the Mekong Delta region, including Tra Vinh. In particular, the Project aims to equip 3 main target groups: farmers, local authorities and agricultural enterprises with the necessary knowledge and skills to cope with the challenges of climate change.
The project has implemented 06 pilot models, held meetings to evaluate the effectiveness for replication, all 06/06 models are effective: storing rainwater for households, storing rainwater for agricultural cultivation, growing hydroponic vegetables, treating surface water, treating rainwater into drinking water and treating wastewater using wetland method. In particular, the hydroponic vegetable growing model can be applied to many subjects: farmers, women, youth unions; brackish, salty, fresh areas... low investment cost, suitable for current economic conditions. Especially, people in island communes, coastal areas, ethnic minority areas.
From the results of the hydroponic vegetable growing model, Associate Professor, Dr. Diep Thanh Tung, Vice Principal of TVU affirmed: TVU will coordinate with departments and branches: Agriculture and Rural Development, Provincial Women's Union, Provincial Cooperative Union, Farmers' Association, Youth Union... to replicate the model. The school will orient the training of human resources in related sectors and fields, in order to create a core team to implement the Project in the future in a sustainable direction. Because this is a Project that contributes to raising public awareness of environmental protection and climate change adaptation, especially developing sustainable and smart agricultural farming models, minimizing emissions in the context of saline intrusion, drought and climate change as present.
At Con Chim Community Tourism Site, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van, Head of the Con Chim Community Tourism Cooperative Group, who directly participates in the project (hydroponic vegetable growing), said: Con Chim currently has 19 households participating in the tourism chain, in 2023, welcoming over 23,000 domestic and foreign visitors. Households participating in tourism here exploit existing strengths such as traditional cakes: leaf cakes, pancakes, water coconuts and local seafood: shrimp, crab, fish combined with folk games...
Since 2023, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van has participated in the Project; trained to know how to adapt to climate change, natural farming techniques. In particular, equipped with knowledge to grow hydroponic vegetables: water spinach, mustard greens, Vietnamese coriander... to serve tourists. This is a source of green, clean vegetables to serve tourists staying and dining here.
Also here, after a field visit, Comrade Huynh Cong Lap, Provincial Party Committee member, Chau Thanh District Party Committee Secretary emphasized: the pilot model of hydroponic vegetable growing by the people to adapt to climate change and salinity intrusion, we believe that the goal of the Project is going in the right direction that Chau Thanh district needs. Adapting to climate change, especially drought and salinity intrusion... Chau Thanh prepares many areas, and many people; replicating the model, which is also aiming for a green economic transition, green agriculture, environmentally friendly, is the development strategy that the locality is implementing. Therefore, we will propagate and mobilize the people to cooperate and replicate, especially in island communes and communes near the sea.
