'Glorious Ashes' to represent Vietnam at Oscar 2024

According to the Cinema Department, this is the result of the selection of the National Council established to select films to participate in the Oscars. The film that received the most votes was sent.

Previously, the Department of Cinema received an invitation from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to send a film representing Vietnam to participate in the 96th Academy Awards Preliminary Round in the Best Foreign Language Film category, taking place in 2024 in Los Angeles, USA.

On July 20, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 1940/QD-BVHTTDL on the establishment of the National Council for selecting films to participate in the Preliminary Round of the Best Foreign Language Film Award.

The Council consists of 14 members, with Mr. Ta Quang Dong - Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism as Chairman, Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, Director of the Department of Cinema as Vice Chairman, and members who are experts, managers and artists.

Based on the invitation letter from AMPAS, the Department of Cinema invited units and film studios to consider submitting films to participate in the national selection round to select a work to represent Vietnamese cinema in the preliminary round of the Oscar Awards. Finally, the selected work was Glorious Ashes.

The Glorious Ashes is an adaptation of the short stories of the same name and The Rotten Firewood Drifting Back in the collection of short stories The Island by writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu. The work tells the story of three women with different stories, played by Bao Ngoc Doling, Phuong Anh Dao and Meritorious Artist Hanh Thuy.

It is known that director Bui Thac Chuyen spent nearly 5 years adapting the script, and the screenwriting stage also had the support of writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu.

Before being selected for the Oscars, the film also achieved impressive results at the 2022 Tricontinental Film Festival held in France with the Golden Balloon award.

Domestically, the film also received many positive responses from experts as well as audiences, despite being in the art-house genre that is quite selective of viewers. Earning nearly 4.1 billion VND after its release, this is considered a relatively positive result for an art film.

At the Golden Kite of the Vietnam Cinema Association, Glorious Ashes also won two top awards in the film category, which were Best Feature Film and Best Director for Bui Thac Chuyen. In the acting category, Meritorious Artist Hanh Thuy was also honored for her role as Loan “crazy” in the category of Best Supporting Actress in a Feature Film.

Previously, director Bui Thac Chuyen had created a buzz with the short film Night Ride , which won the Cinéfondation category for young filmmakers at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, or the Fipresci Award from the International Society of Film Critics at the 2009 Venice International Film Festival with the film Floating ...

This year, Bui Thac Chuyen's "opponents" are quite strong names. They include director Tran Anh Hung with The Pot-au-Feu , which made a splash at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, representing France.

Last year, Vietnam's representative film at the Oscars was 578: The Madman's Bullet by director Luong Dinh Dung , but it did not make the shortlist. Vietnam's greatest achievement at this award was Ha Le Diem's Children in the Mist , which made it into the Top 15 best documentaries at the 2023 Oscars.
