Minus points Everton, then what?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/11/2023

As everyone knows, Everton were docked 10 points for breaching the profit and sustainability rules - roughly the Financial Fair Play rules in the Premier League. They have now dropped to second-to-last place in the table because of this punishment. Of course, the story doesn't end there.

Everton FC (right ) was deducted 10 points for violating financial fair play regulations in the English Premier League.

To discuss the consequences or related stories, first of all, it is necessary to "clarify" a lot of information or misunderstandings about the story just mentioned. For example: Everton did not break the law "in the 2021-2022 season". They did not lose £124.5 million (the allowed limit is £105 million) "in the past 3 years". The Premier League did not fine Everton, but that was the penalty recommended by an independent 3-member committee. This committee is like a "judge", the Premier League is just a "prosecutor", and Everton is the "defendant".

The Premier League applied the exact punishment recommended by the independent panel to demonstrate objectivity, and also to stay out of the way while Everton appeals. The appeal will be considered by another independent panel. In addition to Everton's appeal (which has 14 days for the club to lodge a complaint), there are 28 days for the individuals or clubs involved to lodge a complaint.

According to the law, Everton exceeded the allowed debt "for a period of 3 consecutive years" (not the last 3 years). This violation of the law was concluded from the figures calculated up to the end of the 2021-2022 season, after which Everton "went to court" in March 2023 and "received a sentence" in November 2023. There is also information stating that Everton has lost more than 400 million pounds in 5 consecutive years (2018-2022). This is the basis for the relevant teams to complain. For example: why not deduct points from Everton in the 2021-2022 season but deduct points now? If points were deducted in the 2021-2022 season, Burnley (who were relegated at that time, while they could have stayed in the league) would have the right to complain and demand compensation. The same was true for Leicester last season - when people concluded that they had violated the law and brought Everton before an independent committee. Or, Everton have been making losses over the past five years as mentioned. So, they could be fined at different specific times, and there would be different consequences for the clubs involved to complain?

Compared to Everton, Manchester City has committed many more violations, so why not punish them? Let me say right away: "not yet", not "no". The Premier League has sent an indictment of 115 "crimes" to the independent committee. It's easy to understand: reviewing 115 "crimes" is not as fast as reviewing and trying one crime of Everton! Everton themselves admitted their mistakes, while Manchester City always tries to cover it up, so the accusations against Pep Guardiola's team are always unclear. Chelsea is a different story. This team is accused of financial fraud, spending money without going through the books under Roman Abramovich. There is still no official conclusion, so there is no trial (Chelsea) or no sentence (Manchester City). In theory, Chelsea and Manchester City can both be severely punished - even relegated, but if their crimes were clear, they wouldn't just be deducted 10 points like Everton.

But if people deliberately ignore or, somehow, let the Chelsea and Manchester City suspicions sink, then those are stories that go beyond the scope of football!
