Vietnam women's team faces challenges
The Vietnamese women's team temporarily tops Group C of the 2023 Asian Women's Volleyball Championship qualifiers after two wins. Thanh Thuy and her teammates defeated South Korea 3-2 before defeating Uzbekistan 3-0, thereby earning 5 match points with 6 wins and 2 losses.
Taiwan (China) ranked second with 1 win, 4 match points, 5 wins and 3 losses. South Korea also had 1 win but ranked third with only 3 points, 5 wins and 3 losses.
The Vietnamese women's volleyball team needs to win against Taiwan (China).
In the final round, if Vietnam loses to Taiwan (China) and South Korea wins against Uzbekistan, group C will have 3 teams with 2 wins each. According to the scoring format of volleyball, the secondary indexes considered are match points and the ratio of wins/losses.
Volleyball match points are not counted like soccer. For matches with a score of 3-2, the winning team only gets 2 points, the losing team gets 1 point. For matches with a score of 3-0 or 3-1, the winning team gets 3 points, the losing team gets no points.
Therefore, in case of losing to Taiwan (China) 0-3 or 1-3, the Vietnamese women's team will lose the top spot in the group. If the Korean team wins Uzbekistan 3-0 or 3-1 (very likely because Uzbekistan is the weakest team in the group), coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team will be pushed down to third place.
The most tense situation was when Vietnam lost to Taiwan (China) with a score of 2-3. Meanwhile, the Korean team beat Uzbekistan 3-0. In this situation, all 3 top teams had 2 wins, 6 match points and a win/loss ratio of 8/5. The next sub-index to consider is the win/loss ratio.
Thus, despite winning both of the first two matches, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team is still not sure to qualify for the top eight bracket. Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team must still focus on the task of defeating the Taiwanese team (China) in the match this afternoon (September 1).
The match between the Vietnamese women's volleyball team and Taiwan (China) takes place at 15:00.
