In 2018, in order to preserve and promote cultural values as well as honor the talented techniques of ancient bronze casting artisans, artisan Nguyen Ba Quy (Thieu Trung commune, Thieu Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province) and his fellow artisans and collaborators decided to cast a version of the Ngoc Lu bronze drum using traditional manual methods.
The bronze drum is displayed and introduced within the framework of the 701st anniversary of the death of Historian Le Van Huu - 2023 in Thieu Trung commune.
After more than 6 months of continuous work by 11 artisans, the drum was completed with a drumhead diameter of up to 205cm, a drum body and drum legs with a diameter of 242cm, a height of up to 155cm and a weight of more than 2 tons, bearing all the characteristics of the Ngoc Lu bronze drum.
The patterns of bronze drums are imbued with traditional features.
The cast drum face protrudes from the drum body. The drum body is bulging, the drum body is cylindrical, the drum legs are truncated cones and slightly flared. The drum face in the middle is embossed with a 14-pointed star surrounding a raised circular surface, which is the knob for beating the drum. Between the star points are peacock feather motifs. The drum's pattern imitates the Ngoc Lu bronze drum with a sunken-raised style, including many symbolic drawings such as 18 Lac birds, rice pounding scenes, dancing...
After the bronze drum was completed on March 30, 2018, the Vietnam Record Organization officially announced the record for "The person who made the largest traditional manual version of Ngoc Lu bronze drum in Vietnam" (record breaking), and at the same time awarded the record confirmation to bronze casting artisan Nguyen Ba Quy.
This is considered one of the typical traditional handicraft products of Thieu Trung commune, Thieu Hoa district in general and of Tra Dong traditional bronze casting in particular. The bronze drum has been carefully and thoughtfully preserved by artisans and Tra Dong traditional bronze casting village.
On the occasion of the 701st anniversary of the death of Historian Le Van Huu - 2023, Thieu Hoa district displayed and introduced this traditional manual version of Ngoc Lu bronze drum along with many traditional Tra Dong bronze casting products to a large number of tourists from all over the world.
