Young doctors volunteer for community health

Young doctors examine, provide health consultation, and dispense free medicine to people in Thanh Hoa City.

With the aim of gathering young doctors, physicians, and medical staff full of enthusiasm, volunteer spirit, and dedication to society and the community, on May 11, 2016, the Secretariat of the Provincial Youth Union (YU) issued Decision No. 39-QD/UBH to establish the Thanh Hoa Young Doctors Club with a total of 45 members who are doctors and medical staff from provincial and district hospitals. The Club's Executive Board consists of 15 members.

Immediately after its launch, a large team of doctors and medical staff in the Club examined and consulted on diseases related to the eyes, teeth and jaws, cardiovascular system, blood fat, high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory system, bones and joints... prescribed and dispensed free medicine and instructed on treatment methods, and consulted 600 people who were policy families and families in difficult circumstances in Dong Hoa commune, Dong Son district (now Thanh Hoa city).

From this initial activity, over the years, with the motto: "Go to share, contribute and grow", under the guidance of the Provincial Youth Union, the Provincial Young Doctors Club has promoted the spirit of volunteerism of the medical staff, organized and effectively participated in many programs to examine and provide free medicine to families with meritorious services, families with revolutionary contributions, children in difficult circumstances, young people in industrial zones, ethnic minority youth, young religious followers in difficult circumstances... Every year, the Club periodically organizes the program "Journey of young doctors following Uncle Ho's teachings, volunteering for community life".

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the team of doctors and medical staff in the Club played a core role, taking the lead in disease prevention, participating in supporting concentrated quarantine areas; propagating disease prevention methods in residential areas, schools, and hospitals; participating in the vaccination campaign to ensure progress; consulting and caring for F0 at home...

Doctor Nguyen Van Ngoc, Provincial General Hospital shared: "As a young doctor, I understand the difficulties of the people, especially the lonely elderly, the poor, and ethnic minorities in remote areas who do not have access to medical services, so I signed up to join the Club with the aim of helping people reduce their hardships. Each trip for me is not only an opportunity for me to experience but also an opportunity to contribute my youth to the community."

Every year, Thanh Hoa Youth Union coordinates with related units to organize free medical examinations and health consultations for more than 5,000 people; mobilizes social resources to donate gifts and provide free medicine to people. In these activities, the Provincial Young Doctors Club has effectively contributed. Up to now, the Club has participated in hundreds of medical examinations, provided free medicine, and provided health consultations to more than 13,000 people.

Also from the activities of the Youth Union, the team of young doctors realized the importance of improving medical ethics and professional capacity, thereby proactively studying to improve their professional qualifications. 3 major movements: "Young doctors study, practice, improve medical ethics", "Young doctors are creative in scientific research", "Young doctors for community health" have come into life; promoting the pioneering and voluntary role of young doctors in caring for, protecting and improving people's health.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Dung, Head of the Examination Department, Provincial General Hospital, Chairman of the Provincial Young Doctors Club said: “The Club is focusing on promoting the work of fostering, training in ideology, politics, improving medical ethics for members; proposing solutions to support young doctors and physicians in scientific research, improving professional qualifications, applying information technology in medical examination and treatment. At the same time, organizing appropriate programs and campaigns; focusing on in-depth activities, leaving specific values, towards the community”.

From the success of the Provincial Young Doctors Club, many Young Doctors Clubs in districts, cities and even in hospitals have been established and operated effectively, closely linked to professional activities to contribute to the care and protection of community health, connecting young doctors with enthusiasm, capacity, volunteering for the community, building a good image of young doctors. Notable examples include: Thanh Hoa City Young Doctors Club, Tho Xuan District Young Doctors Club, Sam Son City Young Doctors Club, Provincial Oncology Hospital Young Doctors Club...

Ms. Le Thi Trang, Permanent Vice President of the Provincial Youth Union, said: “With practical actions, the image of doctors and nurses of the Provincial Young Doctors Club has become increasingly friendly and created a good impression. Volunteer activities have become a bright spot in the youth volunteer movement for community health. In addition, they actively participate in scientific research, contributing to building the image of doctors with good expertise, good medical ethics and pioneering in digital transformation. In order to improve the effectiveness of the Club's activities in the coming time, the Provincial Youth Union will conduct a review of its activities, consolidate the Club, supplement and perfect its operating regulations."
