China's Foreign Ministry said Beijing welcomes Indonesia to become a full member of BRICS, and is committed to promoting high-quality development cooperation within the bloc and contributing to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
"BRICS is an important platform for promoting unity and cooperation in the 'global South' and an important force in promoting reform of the global governance system. The bloc is committed to safeguarding multilateralism, safeguarding fairness and justice, and promoting common development," the ministry said.
On the same day, Brazil - the country that holds the BRICS presidency in 2025 - said that Indonesia officially joined the group as a full member, thereby continuing to expand the group of the world's leading emerging economies.
“Jakarta shares with other members of the group the view of supporting the reform of global governance institutions and actively contributing to the deepening of cooperation in the Global South,” the Brazilian government stressed.
Indonesia was the first Southeast Asian country to join BRICS. Meanwhile, Thailand and Malaysia have also publicly expressed their desire to become members of the group.
According to Russian officials, there are currently about 20 countries that want to become BRICS partners, namely: Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Burkina Faso, Venezuela, Honduras, Zimbabwe, Cambodia, Colombia, Congo, Laos, Kuwait, Morocco, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Syria, Chad, Sri Lanka, Equatorial Guinea and South Sudan.
