Tourists to Vietnam continue to decline

In the first 5 months of 2023, Vietnam welcomed nearly 4.6 million international visitors, 12.6 times higher than the same period last year but still only 63% compared to the same period in 2019, before the pandemic.

Of the total of nearly 4.6 million international arrivals to Vietnam in the first five months of this year, arrivals by air reached more than 4 million, accounting for 88%. Arrivals by road reached 503,200, accounting for 10.9%; by sea reached 50,900, accounting for 1.1%.

To date, Asia remains the largest market providing visitors to Vietnam with 3.4 million arrivals. Of which, the Korean market accounts for the largest proportion - more than 1.31 million arrivals; Chinese visitors to Vietnam reached nearly 398,900 arrivals.

Some Asian countries with significant numbers of visitors to Vietnam after 5 months include Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Cambodia and Singapore. In total, 5 markets contributed 922,000 visitors. After 5 months, there were more than 621,100 European visitors to Vietnam.

Also according to the General Statistics Office, in the past 5 months, domestic accommodation and food service revenue increased by 22.1%, estimated at VND268,300 billion; tourism revenue increased by 89.4%, estimated at VND11,600 billion due to many holidays in the month.

In 2023, Vietnam's tourism industry aims to welcome at least 8 million international visitors. To achieve this goal, the Government has just issued Resolution No. 82, specifically setting out many key tasks and solutions to accelerate recovery and accelerate effective and sustainable tourism development. Many breakthrough policies on immigration and visa procedures are also being discussed at the National Assembly, expected to be approved soon to create a boost to welcome international visitors to Vietnam.
