Originating from Decree No. 45 signed by President Ho Chi Minh on October 10, 1945, the Faculty of Letters of the Vietnam National University was established, the predecessor of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU today.
Over the past 80 years, whether under the name of University of Letters, Hanoi University of Science or University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the school has achieved many great achievements.

Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU, said that after 3 decades of operation within the structure of VNU, the school has become a center for training high-quality human resources, excellent scientific research, and macro-policy consulting for the Party and State.
The school currently has 500 staff, of which 85% are excellent scientists with doctoral degrees; 25% have professor and associate professor titles - nearly 3 times higher than the current average of Vietnamese higher education . The school is training 80 programs at 3 levels, including 30 bachelor programs, 28 master programs and 22 doctoral programs; 1 specialized high school. The total training scale is currently about 14,000 people, of which postgraduate students, researchers and international students account for about 25%.
Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Minh Son, Director of VNU, said that VNU identifies the school as one of the strongest centers in training, research and policy consulting in the field of social sciences and humanities.
In order for the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to continue to promote its pioneering role, VNU proposes that the Government, ministries, departments and branches pay more attention to investing in the field of social sciences and humanities, and at the same time allow piloting of special mechanisms, outstanding autonomy, creating conditions for developing a large team of scholars, attracting talents, promoting strategic research and implementing comprehensive autonomy.

Attending and speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long said that without strong basic science, there can be no breakthrough applied science, and even less can there be an independent and sustainable development strategy.
Therefore, with its position as the leading center of social sciences and humanities in the country, the Deputy Prime Minister said that the school needs to take the lead in basic science research and training, contributing to preserving and developing fundamental cultural values, while opening up new approaches in training, research and policy consulting.
Specifically, the Deputy Prime Minister requested that the school continue to strongly innovate the training model combining basic science and applied science, develop regular and short-term specialized/interdisciplinary programs, and train and foster people with strong political will, profound scientific thinking, and effective practical capacity.
Besides, the school also needs to promote high-quality scientific research, especially works of theoretical and practical value, directly serving the process of formulating guidelines and policies of the Party and State.
The school needs to actively participate in building and implementing central resolutions, proactively advising on cultural policies, contributing to making culture truly become an endogenous strength and a driving force for sustainable development of the country.

In addition, he also requested that the school proactively integrate internationally, becoming a prestigious address in global academic cooperation, on the principle of maintaining identity, proactively absorbing the quintessence of humanity to enrich and spread Vietnamese intelligence to the world.
At the ceremony, on behalf of the Party and State leaders, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long awarded the First Class Labor Medal to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Over the past 80 years, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU has been awarded many noble titles by the Party and the State: First-class Independence Medal (2001), Labor Hero (2005), Ho Chi Minh Medal (2010), First-class Labor Medal (in 1981, 2015, 2025)...
To date, 100% of undergraduate training programs have been quality-accredited, many of which are accredited according to ASEAN standards. In 2024, the school's social sciences field was ranked 501-600 in the world by Times Higher Education. In 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training assessed the school as being among the universities with the highest educational quality accreditation results in the country.
