1,100 students and trainees are currently studying at the Vietnam-Japan University.
Mr. Sugano Yuichi, Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam, stated that for many years JICA has had the opportunity to contribute to Vietnam's socio -economic development as an agency of the Japanese government implementing official development assistance (ODA) projects.
This year marks the 4th time JICA has organized a booth at the Vietnam-Japan Festival. JICA's booths at the festival aim to bring collaborative projects closer to the public, covering four areas: education , climate change, community development and tourism (sending Japanese volunteers), and transportation.
The Chief Representative of the JICA Vietnam Office, Mr. Sugano Yuichi (far left), introduced the recirculating eel farming model being piloted at Can Tho University to the Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Van Duoc, and other attendees, as part of the "Project to strengthen linkages and apply science to promote sustainable development of the Mekong Delta adapting to climate change".
In the field of education, there are projects to enhance training, research, and university administration capacity at the Vietnam-Japan University (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) and projects to support the Mekong Delta in adapting to climate change, which are being implemented in collaboration with Can Tho University.
"The Vietnam-Japan University (VJU - Vietnam National University, Hanoi) is a symbol of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan, established in 2014. Since 2015, JICA has implemented a technical cooperation project to support the university in laying the foundation for master's degree programs to meet the needs of training high-quality human resources for Vietnam. Currently, there are approximately 1,100 students and trainees studying in the university's undergraduate and master's degree programs," said Mr. Sugano Yuichi.
We hope to receive the support of the Vietnamese Government when launching new training programs.
Speaking with a reporter from Thanh Nien Newspaper, Mr. Hayashida Takayuki, a JICA expert and coordinator of the Technical Cooperation Project to Enhance Training, Research, and University Management Capacity at the Vietnam-Japan University (VJU), said that the university currently offers 6 undergraduate programs and 8 postgraduate programs in natural sciences and social sciences.

"The strength of the Vietnam-Japan University lies in the fact that from the first and second years, students focus on subjects related to soft skills, humanities knowledge, and creativity before studying specialized knowledge in the third and fourth years. Furthermore, at the university, students from different disciplines, at both master's and bachelor's levels, can study and research together to enhance their knowledge and experience," said Mr. Hayashida Takayuki.
Mr. Hayashida Takayuki added that another field of study attracting attention at VJU is civil engineering, offering bachelor's and master's degrees. Here, students and trainees learn about Japanese metro construction techniques and gain practical experience through visits to metro lines in Ho Chi Minh City.
Mr. Hayashida Takayuki stated that the Vietnam-Japan University is currently researching and planning to open new majors and training programs, and is awaiting approval from the Vietnamese government to begin enrollment in the fall of 2025 for the 2025-2026 academic year. These include a major in Asian Studies (taught in English); a major focused on building and training human resources for the semiconductor industry in Vietnam; a major related to automation; and a major in computer science (already offering a bachelor's degree program, with the university considering opening a master's program).

Notably, the Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) project is on display and being introduced to visitors. This is one of JICA's largest projects, completed and commencing commercial operation on December 22, 2024. Tomorrow, March 9, 2025, the official inauguration ceremony for Metro Line 1 will be held with the participation of many politicians from both Vietnam and Japan.
