The application of an automatic ticket checking system using electronic identification, authentication, biometric recognition and cashless payment on the Cat Linh - Ha Dong railway line is the result after more than 4 months of implementing plan No. 428 of the Ministry of Public Security , Ministry of Construction and Hanoi People's Committee on solutions for identification, electronic authentication and biometric recognition at stations on the urban railway line.
According to Mr. Khuat Viet Hung - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hanoi Railway One Member Co., Ltd. (Hanoi Metro), to implement the above plan, Hanoi Metro has coordinated with relevant units to carry out the following tasks:
Upgrading the multi-standard reader equipment at all control gates at 12 stations of the Cat Linh - Ha Dong railway line, ensuring safe and smooth communication with chip-based citizen identification cards, NFC cards, QR codes, bank cards and credit cards according to EMV standards. Thereby helping passengers have more options when buying train tickets, in line with the trend of cashless payments in the world .
The AI camera system is also integrated at ticket gates, allowing facial biometric matching with photo data in passengers' ID cards, ensuring safety, security and accuracy in authenticating train passengers.
At the same time, Hanoi Metro completed technical connections with the Center for Research and Application of Population Data and Citizen Identification of the Ministry of Public Security, ensuring synchronization of identification data and performing authentication via the VNeID application to create maximum convenience for passengers.
Since August 20, the system has been tested on the entire Cat Linh - Ha Dong railway line, attracting nearly 70,987 registrations and more than 344,014 uses, receiving many positive responses.
By November 18, Hanoi Metro had completed the conversion to the new system.
For passengers who do not use the app or biometric identification, Hanoi Metro still sells tickets in cash. But instead of receiving a ticket card like before, passengers who buy tickets in cash will receive a QR code to scan their tickets at the ticket gate.
In phase 2 of the plan, Hanoi Metro will deploy it at 8 stations on the Nhon - Hanoi station metro line and test it at some stations from December 25 to 31, 2025.
From January 1, 2026, the system will operate to serve passengers at 30% of ticket gates on the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station metro line.
By January 31, 2026, all hardware upgrades, data centers and AFC (Automated Fare Collection) management software for both Cat Linh - Ha Dong and Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station routes will be completed, and the entire system is expected to be put into operation in February 2026.
