On the afternoon of August 5, the Vietnam Science Association, the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE), in collaboration with the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM) and the Organizing Committee of the Vietnam Science Summer School (VSSS), held the opening ceremony of VSSS12.

Ông Nguyễn Hữu Hà – Phó Giám đốc Sở Khoa học và Công nghệ (KH&CN) tỉnh Gia Lai,

Mr. Nguyen Huu Ha - Deputy Director of Department of Science and Technology of Gia Lai province, delivered the opening speech.

In his opening speech, Mr. Nguyen Huu Ha - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology (KH&CN) of Gia Lai province, affirmed that VSSS is not only a school, but also a special space that inspires liberal thinking, spreads passion for discovery and nurtures social responsibility in young people who love knowledge and are passionate about science.

According to Mr. Ha, with the theme “Embrace the Unknown”, the program encourages young people not to avoid the unknown, but to proactively accept it with curiosity, courage and a spirit of commitment to new horizons of knowledge. From the experiences at the summer school, students will bring with them not only knowledge but also the scientific spirit: passion - creativity - openness - responsibility.

“Vietnam needs more young people who dare to embrace the unknown. Instead of being afraid of things that cannot be predicted or controlled, young people should be open to new experiences, challenges and opportunities. Dare to step out of their comfort zone, be ready to go far and contribute to a modern, sustainable and humane science,” said Mr. Nguyen Huu Ha.

According to the organizers, VSSS12 attracted the participation of many famous scientists and 140 students carefully selected from hundreds of applications, representing many different scientific fields.

Throughout the course, students will participate in 13 in-depth lectures, two roundtable discussions, and a Science-A-Thon. These activities not only enhance professional knowledge but also ignite the passion for research and discovery in each student.

The lectures at the summer school are multidisciplinary, thought-provoking and scientifically inspiring. They help students better understand the beauty and challenges of the research path, thereby giving them the right direction in their careers.

Not only that, the program also provides a solid foundation for scientific research and equips the necessary skills to become a scientist. With the support of a community of former lecturers and students, the summer school continues to be a place to nurture and support young talents even after the program ends.

This year's lectures are delivered by prestigious Vietnamese scientists at home and abroad, such as: Professor Tran Thanh Van (program advisor), Dr. Giap Van Duong, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Dr. Nguyen Bao Huy, Associate Professor Dr. To Thi Mai Huong, Dr. Nguyen Van Duy, Dr. Le Hong Giang, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Hung...

In addition to the in-depth lectures, the summer school also organizes a “Science Poster” contest – where each student designs a poster introducing their academic journey, interests, favorite research projects and personality. Creative and open, “Science Poster” is jokingly called by students as the “Tinder” of the summer school – a place to connect like-minded souls with a passion for research.

Over the past 11 years, the Vietnam Science Summer School has welcomed nearly 1,900 students. Of these, nearly 400 (about 20%) have received scholarships and completed their doctoral programs, and over 1,100 (about 60%) have graduated with master's degrees in countries with advanced science.

Many have become professors or are working at prestigious universities and organizations such as: Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA); Cambridge University, Oxford University (UK); École Polytechnique, Sorbonne University (France); ETH Zurich (Switzerland); University of Toronto (Canada); University of Goettingen (Germany); National University of Singapore; Kyoto University (Japan). Many of them have worked for research institutes or large corporations as researchers or scientific applications.
