UPTD SD Negeri Papela Primary School won the highest prize in the AIA Healthiest School Contest season 3 in the Asia- Pacific region.

The Asia- Pacific regional awards ceremony of the AIA Healthiest Schools (AHS) program season 3 took place in Da Nang.

Accordingly, on the remote island of Rote Ndao, East Nusa Tenggara Province (Indonesia), the small primary school UPTD SD Negeri Papela has created a change from waste. Faced with the serious problem of waste and low literacy rates, teachers and students have initiated the project “Ecolitera: Stories from waste”.

Students collect plastic bottles, tires and household waste to recycle into school desks, alphabets, school gardens and fertilizer to support local farmers.

The project has helped improve students’ literacy scores by 70% and at the same time raise awareness of environmental protection. This positive message helped UPTD SD Negeri Papela win the 1st prize of AIA Healthiest School Season 3 (AHS).

In addition, the organizers also awarded separate categories for the four core pillars, including the Health and Sustainable Development Award (Tessaban 1 Kittikachorn School, Thailand) with a biodegradable product from fallen leaves; the Mental Health Award (SMP Negeri 43 Bandun School, Indonesia) with an anti-bullying application; the Active Lifestyle Award (Jaffna Hindu College, Sri Lanka) with a school bicycle system; and the Healthy Diet Award (Happy Hollow National High School, Philippines) with an organic farm project combined with nutritioneducation .

The total value of the award is up to $100,000 to continue supporting school health and well-being initiatives.

This year, in Vietnam, the program recorded 651 schools registered to participate. Of which, the two most outstanding representatives were: UK Academy Da Nang won First Prize in the Primary category and Times School Khai Son (Hanoi) won First Prize in the Secondary category. Both schools attended the award ceremony and competed with countries in the region.
