(Dan Tri) - Doctors at Thanh Hoa General Hospital successfully performed surgery to reattach a severed hand to a 54-year-old female patient.

On November 15, Thanh Hoa General Hospital informed that doctors from the Orthopedics - Burns Department of the unit successfully performed surgery to reattach the severed right hand of female patient PTL (54 years old), residing in Hoang Hoa district.

Previously, while working at home with a knife, Ms. L. slipped and fell, her right hand hit the knife hard, causing it to cut in half and bleed profusely.

The patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of hemorrhagic shock, panicked, with a fractured right hand, severed median nerve, ruptured flexor tendons of fingers 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the right hand, and had underlying type 2 diabetes.

The patient was then transferred to the emergency operating room. During the surgery, doctors restored the entire anatomy, suturing the tendons, blood vessels and nerves of the patient's severed hand.

After 3 weeks of treatment, the patient's hand recovered well, with the ability to flex and extend the fingers.

Doctor Hoang Tuan Long, Deputy Head of Orthopedics - Burns Department, said that severed arms or legs are serious injuries that not only threaten the patient's life but also severely affect the patient's life and activities later on.

According to Dr. Long, surgery to reconnect blood vessels, nerves, and severed limbs is considered a complex technique, requiring surgeons to have specialized skills and dexterity.

In addition, surgeons must also understand blood clotting, hemodynamics, and vascular structure to avoid complications that may occur during surgery.
