The Chinese woman was wise in making decisions that went against the majority. Yet she lived a happy life in her later years.

Life is a long journey with many challenges and troubles that can come at any time. At different stages of life, you will have to bear different responsibilities. Because of rushing into the tasks of life, you forget to take time for yourself.

Ms. Liu (68 years old, Nanning, China) used to be a mother who sacrificed everything for her children.

However, after retirement, she made decisions that went against the majority. But that was what made her have leisurely days in her final years that made everyone jealous.

Unlike everyone around her, Ms. Liu firmly refused her son and daughter-in-law's request to take care of her grandchild.

Sharing the reason for this decision, Ms. Luu said that there was a time when she lived with her children. However, she was under a lot of pressure. Not to mention, their lifestyle, outlook on life and ways of taking care of the baby were different. She did not want the family to have stress arising from such small things.

However, she did not outright refuse to help take care of her grandchild. “I am clear with my children that I will only help take care of their grandchild when they have an emergency that they cannot handle in time. Or on weekends, when they still have to work, they can bring their grandchild to my house,” Ms. Luu shared.

In addition to refusing to take care of her grandchild, the 68-year-old woman also said no to her son’s request to pay for a house or sell her house to move in with him. She said she has a monthly pension of about 3,000 yuan (about 10 million VND). In addition, she has 100,000 yuan (more than 340 million VND) in savings, enough to cover any unfortunate events.

After her son and daughter-in-law got married but still had to rent a house, the children suggested that their mother sell the house they were living in to pool money and buy a new house together. However, Mrs. Luu firmly refused. “Sooner or later, the house will belong to the children. But for now, I still want to live in this house. Because I understand that old age requires freedom and comfort.”

Despite her children’s persuasion, the house was not sold. She only gave them 40,000 yuan, the compensation she had just received, to help with some of the housing costs. After that, she continued to live alone in her house.

When she had a headache or felt unwell, she would call her son and make an appointment for a doctor to come to her house. Apart from minor illnesses, she seemed to have no major problems in her life.

Recently, she has been getting weaker. Her children suggested sending her to a nursing home so that she would have someone to take care of her. However, she firmly refused. She chose to hire a maid so that she could live comfortably in her own home. The 68-year-old woman said that hiring a maid costs 3,000 yuan a month. At the same time, her son and daughter each support her with 1,000 yuan to cover her living expenses.

In just a few months, Ms. Vuong, the maid, became her close friend. Sometimes the two of them would join in knitting, painting, or gardening together. These colorful days not only enriched her life but also increased her joy.

Sharing about her life, Mrs. Liu made many people in the village jealous. Although her life was not luxurious and wealthy, her wise choices helped her have a comfortable and fulfilling life in her later years.

Ms. Liu’s story makes many people realize that what makes a happy retirement is each person’s choice. This old lady’s choice makes us understand that no matter what age you are, you need to clearly understand your own desires.

Happiness is not necessarily the attention of others, nor is it having a lot of wealth or real estate. The important thing you need to do is learn to face life and enjoy happiness. Do not be jealous of other people's lives, but cherish what you have.
