Nam Can Border Post is located on a gentle hill with barren land. To have the current production area, officers and soldiers had to put in a lot of effort. In addition to leveling and creating the ground, the unit's working groups had to take turns going to other places to get a large amount of highly fertile soil to transport back to the garden.

Along with that, the soldiers had to use green leaves, compost them with organic fertilizers and spread them down, and build irrigation systems to keep the soil loose and moist. Based on weather conditions, climate and soil, each season, the unit chose to plant suitable plants.

Along with the vegetable garden, Nam Can Border Post also has 2 ponds and a cement tank for raising freshwater fish. In the unit's livestock barn, there are always more than 40 pigs of different weights and many other poultry.

Along with natural ponds, the unit invested in cement tanks to raise fish.

Thanks to effective farming and livestock raising, Nam Can Border Post has been self-sufficient in more than 80% of food imported into the kitchen to serve the soldiers.

Talking to us, Lieutenant Colonel Luong Trong Thuy, Head of Nam Can Border Guard Station, said: “Stationed in a remote border area, we determined that doing a good job of increasing production is an important and regular task. On that basis, the unit command has deployed and assigned tasks to teams, working groups, and individuals in charge of each area and certain vegetable gardens. In addition to the time spent on political tasks, the heads of each department must be responsible for urging officers and soldiers to take care of planting and raising livestock to ensure food is supplied to the kitchen. Funds from increasing production are used to care for the material and spiritual lives of soldiers, support people in economic development, and reduce poverty.”

In the unit's barn there are always more than 40 pigs.
Officers and soldiers always keep livestock and poultry farms clean and disease-free.

On the basis of doing well in increasing production, officers and soldiers of Nam Can Border Guard Station have supported many households in the area to have sustainable livelihoods. Specifically, each year, the unit allocates a number of breeding pigs to help people develop livestock farming. After many years of implementing the VACR model (garden-pond-pen-field), Mr. Va Chu Rua's family, Nam Can village, Nam Can commune, Ky Son district has escaped poverty.

That change began in 2019, when Nam Can Border Guard Station allocated a large amount of funds from the production increase fund to support Mr. Rua's family in buying plants, seeds, and renovating the garden, while also mobilizing officers and soldiers to help the family. After a while, Mr. Rua's family had 2 fish ponds, 5 sao of rice fields, and barns for raising poultry such as chickens and geese.

“Thanks to the Border Guard’s help, my family has a stable income and livelihood, and has escaped poverty. I just hope that the livestock and farming work will be favorable so that we can save money and soon become rich,” Mr. Rua shared.

From effective production work, Nam Can Border Post always has clean food to serve soldiers, helping people develop the economy , eliminate hunger and reduce poverty, and beautify the image of Uncle Ho's soldiers in difficult border areas.
