Once a young author who wrote novels about military intelligence at the age of 29, now a resident reporter for the Industry and Trade Newspaper in Vinh Phuc, journalist Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy is a beautiful image of a generation that grew up in peace , dedicated, loyal and full of aspiration to continue writing untold stories about the country, about change, from within each wound of war.
Strange pen at the age of twenty-nine
Novel "The Silver Note" |
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the complete liberation of the South and the reunification of the country, when the whole country is living in memories and pride, I remember a special book: “The Silver Paper”. Not a grand epic, nor a dry historical document, it is an intelligence novel written from the mind of a young post-war person - journalist Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, who was then nearly 30 years old.
I still remember, that year I was a reporter in charge of the Soldier Portrait column of the People's Army Weekend Newspaper. The first time I read the manuscript of that book, I exclaimed: "Could the author of the book on B52 be a girl under 30 years old?!" - a title that later became one of the first articles introducing Thuy to the public. In the midst of the turbulent times, a female writer dared to touch the intelligence field, and through novels, which was a rare event.
Writing about intelligence, gratitude to posterity
The work is based on the times she was told about her war memories by Colonel Phan Mac Lam, former Chief of Office of General Department 2, the pieces of paper passed around, the fleeting but vital meetings, the battles of intelligence and loyalty to the Fatherland.
“The piece of silver paper” is a symbol. In the story, it is a fake military intelligence document released to deceive the CIA, causing the B52 bombing in Hanoi to fail. But in reality, it is a symbol for a generation that lives after the war, but does not allow itself to forget the war. Writing a novel as a descendant is a way to show gratitude, a way to thank the previous generation through one’s own words.
From Vinh Phuc to all the Northwest: The person who writes policies with all his heart
As a reporter for a local press agency, it was there that she was trained in courage, practicality and a journalism style close to the people. During her time working there, she stood out as the main writer of the editorial office, specializing in going to the grassroots, venturing into complex and remote areas to exploit topics from real life.
The valuable thing is that, even in the locality, she does not limit herself to the framework of administrative propaganda but always proactively chooses thorny topics such as investigating violations in land use, resource management, reflecting the frustrations in administrative reform, and petty corruption. Many of her series of articles have been published in major newspapers, creating a clear resonance and social impact.
At the same time, she is also one of the few provincial newspaper reporters who participate in writing in-depth on Party building, ideology and theory. She has written many articles refuting wrong views, defending the Party's ideological foundation in the context of the explosion of social media information. This has helped reporter Thu Thuy win consecutive major awards such as: National Press Encouragement Award 2023, National Golden Hammer and Sickle Special Award 2 years 2022, 2024, B Prize National Golden Hammer and Sickle Award 2023, A Prize for Press on Party Building of Vinh Phuc Province 2023, A, B, C Prizes of Vinh Phuc Provincial Press Award for many consecutive years and many other central press awards...
Journalist Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy |
Not confined to politics, she is also the author of a series of moving portraits of soldiers, teachers, ethnic women, and shining examples of studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality, and style. Her writing style is simple, rich in detail, emotional, but sober.
Now, journalist Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy is a resident reporter for the Cong Thuong Newspaper in Vinh Phuc. At the same time, she is in charge of monitoring the areas of Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Dien Bien provinces and many localities in the Northwest region. Her work is no longer about novels, but about real-life reports, series of political articles reflecting the cause of innovation, industrialization and modernization right on the land that was once plowed by bombs and bullets.
She writes about factories in the mountains, industrial promotion programs, digital transformation in production, and ethnic minority workers receiving vocational training support. Her articles are neither rosy nor sad. They are like her, traveling, staying, living with the land, and writing with a clear heart.
Coming from Vinh Phuc Newspaper, where she was a prominent investigative reporter, Thuy gradually transformed herself when she joined Cong Thuong Newspaper, a press agency of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, a multi-sector economic agency full of challenges. From writing stories about the poor, she switched to analyzing economic mechanisms. From going to the market, she entered industrial seminars, supply chains and CPTPP.
It was not easy, but she was not afraid to learn. And thanks to her spirit of dedication, she continued to win the Golden Hammer and Sickle Journalism Award in 2024 when she transferred to work at the Industry and Trade Newspaper with a series of political articles on creative innovations for the country to firmly enter a new era, "the era of national growth", in which the Industry and Trade sector plays a prominent role.

Writing to accompany innovative lands
Perhaps what makes me love Thu Thuy the most is that she does not write to “reflect” but to “connect”. Each of her articles about remote areas is always associated with an understanding of policy, a respect for history and a desire to bring the light of industrialization to places that were once forgotten.
She wrote about a Dao girl in Tan Uyen who learned industrial sewing, about a biomass power project in the heart of Muong Lay, about an improved brick kiln that helps reduce emissions in Thanh Son district... Those seemingly small things are the lifeblood of a sustainable economy.
In an era where social media reigns supreme, where many people rush to write to keep up with trends, Thuy chooses to go slowly. But each of her steps leaves its mark on the red soil, on the mountainside, in each news report reflecting a policy that is entering life.
From the “Silver Paper” of the past to the newspapers of today, Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy has proven that: Writing about war is not only about the past but also about responsibility for the present. Writing about intelligence is not only about re-enactment but also about gratitude. And doing journalism today is to contribute to building the once devastated lands into new development centers of the country.
Sharing her feelings on April 30, the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and the reunification of the country, the author of the novel “The Silver Paper” was filled with emotion and revealed that she is writing more than 10 chapters to soon republish, promising to bring to the public more of the exploits of Vietnamese intelligence officers. Readers will certainly be more satisfied because many secrets will be revealed and many very complicated intelligence relationships will be “whitened”… From there, readers will understand more clearly about the work of intelligence officers… They are silent heroes on a battlefield that is also very silent but extremely fierce and fierce! |
