From fear of English to inspirational journey

“In the past, there were times when I really thought that I would never learn English in this life. At that time, I just focused on learning vocabulary and doing grammar exercises day after day. But the strange thing was that the more I studied, the more I felt like I was losing my roots. What I received was not progress, but dryness, boredom and even panic every time I had to use English. Later, when I sat down and thought about it, I felt very sorry because I had spent a lot of time, money and effort to learn English, but after 10 years, when someone asked: “How is your English?”, I could only smile and say: I lost my roots” – said Mr. Nguyen The Anh.

Also according to Mr. Nguyen The Anh, later, when he was lucky enough to know the method of learning English through stories, everything started to change for the founder of The Anh English.

He stopped cramming vocabulary and grammar, and instead focused on listening to and speaking a single English story until he was fluent. With just one story and constant repetition, he understood English for the first time without translation, felt comfortable reading, and could even discuss and retell the story in different tenses — without too much effort.

From children, students, working people to the elderly, everyone can start over with English.

Once you can listen and speak English naturally, comfortably and confidently for the first time, everything else seems to become much easier. Unfortunately, most learners start by trying to cram too much at the beginning — only to feel pressured, tired and easily give up as they learn.

“I just thought, if I had such a hard time and now I can learn, then maybe sharing it will help someone else who is struggling. So I started sharing how I learned, and with luck and support from everyone, The Anh English was gradually born as it is today,” said Nguyen The Anh.

Today, The Anh English is no longer a small class. This community has more than a million followers on social media platforms, more than 7,000 students from all over the country and abroad, and nearly 200,000 members participating in the free self-study group.

In his journey to share how to learn English, Nguyen The Anh wrote the book “I Learn English from Negative Numbers” recounting exactly what he experienced, what he wished he had known sooner, and how he overcame his fear of English to actually use this language in life.

"I didn't think it would spread that far, but after a while of being released, the book has sold more than 20,000 copies. What makes me happiest is that all the profits from the book are used for charity activities of The Anh English community. It is not only an English teaching book, but also a book that opens up opportunities - for those who are struggling with foreign languages, and for those who need help out there" - Mr. Nguyen The Anh shared.
