Traffic accidents involving children and students in school areas are still a burning issue in society. Most recently, the incident of a 16-month-old boy being run over and killed by his parents' car right in front of a daycare facility shocked the public. It is worth noting that such heartbreaking incidents continue to recur in schoolyards or at school gates, raising questions about the responsibility of schools, parents and authorities in protecting the safety of children and students.

Tragic accidents right at school

On the morning of March 10, a 16-month-old boy was taken by his family to the private Tuoi Tho Kindergarten ( Ha Tinh ). While the teacher accidentally left the door open after picking up another child, the boy ran out into the street and was hit by a parent's car, resulting in his death. After the incident, the kindergarten was required to temporarily close to serve the investigation and support the family with funeral arrangements.

Previously, in September 2024, in Dak Lak , 3 second graders were also accidentally hit when their parents backed up their car in the yard of Bui Thi Xuan Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Ea Sin Commune, Krong Buk District. Of the 3 students who were hit by the car while sharing an umbrella in the rain, one girl died on the spot, the other two were injured. The cause is believed to be that the driver had only gotten his driver's license for about 3 months and lacked experience. According to the principal, the school did not allow parents to drive into the school. However, at that time, because the security guard opened the gate and then went downstairs, the parents drove into the school yard and caused the accident.

In February 2023, a 9-year-old girl was run over by a school bus right in front of the school gate in Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai. Information from the authorities showed that after the students got off the bus, the driver reversed and hit a third-grade student, killing her on the spot. This was a car rented by a teacher to take the students home for lunch, and when the students returned to school in the afternoon, the unfortunate incident occurred. At the time of the accident, there was no teacher or bus assistant on the bus. According to witnesses, the driver was not careful when turning the bus, leading to the tragic accident.

Also in 2023, in September, a 6th grade student at Thanh Duong Secondary School (Thanh Chuong District, Nghe An) died in the school yard. The incident occurred at noon, when a teacher went to school to pick up his child in the rain, reversed his car and accidentally collided with a mother and child riding a motorbike behind, causing the student on the motorbike to fall and hit the wall of the security room. Although the male student was taken to the emergency room, the hospital determined that the child had died before arriving at the hospital.

Blind spots in school transportation or lack of responsibility?

The causes of these accidents are not only due to individual carelessness, but also reflect "blind spots" in the traffic safety system at schools. Narrow school yards, lack of separate areas for vehicles to enter and exit, or lack of clear regulations on parking, awareness of traffic participants... can all contribute to unfortunate accidents.

Faced with this situation, experts say that there needs to be a synchronous solution from schools, parents and local authorities.

Schools and educational institutions must coordinate with local authorities to rearrange traffic in front of school gates, limit chaotic parking, and arrange forces to guide students in entering and exiting schools and crossing the road safely. Schools also need to regularly organize instruction and practice sessions on safe movement skills for students, especially young children.

On their part, parents must comply with safety regulations when picking up and dropping off their children, not rush to park illegally, and at the same time instruct their children in safety skills.

Especially the responsibility of those who look after small children, because any mishap can have heartbreaking consequences.

Heartbreaking school accidents are a strong warning bell about the safety of children in educational environments. Protecting children is not only the responsibility of schools but also the responsibility of society as a whole. It is time to take more drastic measures to ensure that no student suffers a tragic loss due to preventable negligence.
