To choose a good day to hold their wedding, a young couple of the Daur ethnic group in China will kill a chick together and take out its liver.

The Daur ethnic minority lives mainly in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Heilongjiang Province, with some in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

According to China Daily, the Daur people make their living by hunting, farming and fishing. They are also famous for their unique way of choosing a wedding date. Accordingly, the young couple will hold a knife to kill a pre-selected chick, and then take out its liver.

The Daur people have a very unique way of choosing their wedding date.

If the chicken liver is “good”, the couple can have their fortune told to choose a good day based on the shape of the liver, and start planning their wedding. However, if the chicken liver is “bad”, it will be considered bad luck. At this point, the couple will continue to slaughter more chicks until they find a healthy liver to tell their fortune.

To celebrate this day, the Daur people prepare an “engagement party”. At the event, the young couple will drink wine together. All guests and relatives from both sides will also be entertained. They will drink, sing, and dance all night long.

It is worth mentioning that, unlike other ethnic groups, on the official wedding day, instead of the groom and his family coming to pick up the bride, the Daur bride, along with her bridesmaids, groomsmen and relatives, goes to the groom's house early in the morning. They happily sing along the way.

The groom's family would then entertain the guests enthusiastically and keep the party going until the next day. The bride's family would then wait for an opportunity to steal bowls, plates, and cups before making their way back home.

The groom must redeem the stolen goods by giving some wine to the bride's family, otherwise the goods will not be retrieved. The meaning of this act is that after the theft and blackmail, the couple can start a happy life together.
