Speaking at the opening ceremony of the festival, Chairman of Le Chan District People's Committee Nguyen Hoang Linh affirmed: Hai Phong land is associated with the heroic female general Le Chan, who opened the land of An Bien - the foundation for today's Hai Phong city.
According to folklore, Female General Le Chan was born on February 8, around 18 to 20 AD, in Ven village, An Bien, Dong Trieu, Kinh Mon district, Hai Duong town, now Dong Trieu town, Quang Ninh province.
On the evening of March 17, the traditional festival of Female General Le Chan officially opened in Hai Phong.
She was a beautiful and skilled martial artist. In the context of the country being invaded by foreign invaders, with high national debt and family feuds, with her talent, passion and will, she brought her family soldiers and relatives downstream to the coastal area. Realizing that the land bordering the eastern coastal area (now Hai Phong city) had a strategic position, she decided to choose this land to establish a hamlet, recruit people, build dikes to reclaim land from the sea to establish villages and communes... develop agricultural production and seafood fishing; at the same time, train soldiers and horses, waiting for the right time to repel foreign invaders. To remember her old hometown, she named this new land after her original hometown, Ven village - Trang An Bien.
Under the uprising flag of the Trung Sisters against the invading Eastern Han army, in the spring of 40, she brought her family soldiers to join the Trung Sisters' uprising army and won many resounding victories. She was appointed by the Trung Sisters as Princess Thanh Chan, granted the position of Commander of Military Power, received the seal of Tran Dong Dai Tuong Quan, commanded the Nam Hai army to defend the sea, and ordered to bring soldiers to Trang An Bien to build a military post to guard against the Northern invaders. She obeyed the king's order to return to her old village to build a post, provided money and supplies to the people, taught the people to work and produce, and turned the An Bien land into a rich, prosperous land.
When the Southern Han army returned to attack our country, Princess Thanh Chan received the King's decree and immediately returned to the capital to help Trung Vuong fight the enemy. General Le Chan and her soldiers fought the enemy, but the enemy was strong, so she led her troops to retreat to the Lat Son mountain area (now Kim Bang district, Ha Nam province) to establish a base. The base had just been formed, but the forces were too unequal, Princess Thanh Chan's army was defeated, and female general Le Chan threw herself down to Giat Dau to commit suicide.
Remembering her merits, since ancient times, the people of Hai Phong and surrounding areas have organized many festival activities at Nghe Temple, An Bien Communal House... to express their admiration and gratitude to a talented general, a confidant of Hai Ba Trung. The traditional festival of Female General Le Chan was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2016 and is held annually on the 7th, 8th and 9th of the second lunar month.
Proud of the ancient history of Hai Phong, the land founded by a heroic female general, Hai Phong city today has become a Port city, "Loyal - Determined to win" and is transforming itself to reach out to the ocean.
Along with the development of the city, in recent years, the Party Committee, government and people of Le Chan district have united, created, innovated, strived to complete and exceed the economic and social targets assigned by the city. The district's economic scale has increased rapidly and expanded, always maintaining the growth rate; the budget collection has continuously exceeded the annual plan. Le Chan district has been and is the destination of many large domestic and foreign investors, and is the medical, educational and commercial center of the city.
The Le Chan Female General Festival was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2016.
The traditional festival of General Le Chan was restored by Le Chan district in 2011 and was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2016.
The 2024 Le Chan Female General Traditional Festival will be held by Le Chan District for 3 days from March 16-18 (ie February 7-9, Giap Thin year) at Nghe Temple, An Bien Communal House and Le Chan Female General Monument Square. The main activities include: Incense offering ceremony to commemorate the birthday of Le Chan Female General, main ceremony, procession ceremony, thanksgiving ceremony and cultural and sports activities.
One of the outstanding festival activities is the Narcissus Flower Competition. The competition takes place after 80 years of interruption, contributing to promoting the value of cultural heritage, satisfying the wishes of the people, the desire to offer the best to the Holy Mother Le Chan, expressing infinite gratitude and appreciation for the merits of the Holy Mother.
Activities within the framework of the Festival contribute to promoting cultural values and spiritual tourist attractions in Le Chan district, Hai Phong city to tourists inside and outside the city.
