Arbitrarily adding Literature to medical school admissions, unpredictable consequences

VTC NewsVTC News30/05/2023

Speaking on the sidelines of the 5th Session of the 15th National Assembly , delegate Pham Khanh Phong Lan (Ho Chi Minh City Delegation) said that the fact that schools "destroy" traditional combinations such as Math, Chemistry, Biology to include Literature needs to be carefully studied, should not be arbitrary, the consequences are very unpredictable, it may take 6-7 years to see.

The female representative of Ho Chi Minh City said that universities adding Literature to the admissions criteria for medical majors is not wrong but is not satisfactory, raising doubts from society. The schools have not provided any basis or convincing arguments to prove that medical students who are good at Literature will be better than those who are good at natural sciences .

Ms. Lan proposed two points to the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Health. First, if we accept admission to the medical profession with Literature, we must tighten the standards, "don't assume that passing the entrance exam will mean graduating, doing so will kill people". Second, the schools and the two ministries need to make a public assessment and survey on the reasons for admission to the medical profession with Literature so that society can see the convincing, avoiding rumors and doubts.

National Assembly Representative Nguyen Anh Tri (Hanoi Delegation), former Director of the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, expressed that if we talk about importance, Literature is very important to the medical profession. His whole life, living with virtue and humanity, was probably largely nurtured by his understanding of literature and art. It should not be imposed that only natural sciences have the ability to think logically, such a concept is not correct.

However, Literature cannot be arbitrarily included in the medical entrance exam. The Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and Training, and schools need to organize seminars to gather opinions from scientists and experts.

"At this time, I cannot say whether adding Literature to the medical entrance exam is good or not. With such a big change, it is necessary to discuss and decide based on scientific grounds," said Professor Nguyen Anh Tri.

Expressing his view that the medical industry is related to human life, it is impossible to recruit students indiscriminately, and train based on quantity, but quality must be number one, this Hanoi delegate emphasized the quality of input selection. One thing that worries him a lot at present is the chaotic situation in training doctors and medical staff, which leads to the quality of output not being guaranteed.

“In the medical field, people who are incompetent and do not have a heart that loves patients are absolutely not allowed to work. Even with my students, there are cases where I say directly, you cannot be a doctor, you should find another job,” said Professor Nguyen Anh Tri, reiterating that any change needs to be based on scientific grounds and have a process, not suddenly like what schools are doing.

In the 2023 university admission season, Van Lang University (HCMC) in 2023 has 3 traditional combinations A00, B00 and D08 and 1 new combination D12 (Literature, Chemistry, English).

Vo Truong Toan University (Hau Giang) and Tan Tao University (Long An) use combination B03 (Math, Literature, Biology) in the method of considering high school graduation exam scores to recruit medical students.

Duy Tan University also recruits students for the Medical major using 4 combinations: A16 (Math, Natural Sciences, Literature), B00, D90 (Math, Natural Sciences, Foreign Languages) and D08.

Should regulate the admission combination for the Health sector?

The leader of a university in the field of Medicine and Pharmacy said that the current regulations on university and college admissions issued by the Ministry of Education and Training have stipulated a threshold to ensure input quality (floor score) for the two fields of Pedagogy and Health. To ensure input quality for these two fields, the Ministry should stipulate additional hard combinations that schools are allowed to use for admission. For example, the Health field requires admissions to include Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics, which helps reduce the rate of strange combinations being used for admission.

At the same time, both the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Health should coordinate to find a reasonable solution, not to let students waste 6 years of experience in vain, and furthermore, human lives, this person proposed.
