USD exchange rate today in the world
The dollar fell against most currencies, matching a drop in U.S. Treasury yields, as investors braced for market volatility as the deadline for tariff talks with the United States approaches.
The yen, by contrast, rose across the board on Monday after embattled Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba pledged to stay in office despite his ruling coalition losing its majority in Sunday's Upper House election, a result that was largely priced in. The yen rose 1% to 147.315 yen per dollar, though it was still well off a 3-1/2-month low of 149.19 yen it hit last week on concerns about Japan's political and fiscal outlook. The yen also rose 0.4% against the euro to 172.27 and against the pound to 198.64, also up 0.4%.
Mr Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won 47 seats, three short of the 50 needed to secure a majority in Japan's 248-seat upper house. He has vowed to stay on, although some members of his own party have questioned his future and the opposition is considering a no-confidence vote. The election result, while not a major surprise, comes at a sensitive time as Japan tries to reach a tariff deal with US President Donald Trump before an August 1 deadline.
Investors’ attention remains focused on Donald Trump’s global tariffs, with a Financial Times report last week saying the US president is pushing for new tariffs on goods from the European Union. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Sunday he was confident the US could reach a trade deal with the EU, but insisted August 1 was a hard deadline for imposing new tariffs.
EU diplomats said the bloc was considering wider countermeasures against the US as the prospects of a deal grew dimmer, although it still preferred a negotiated solution.
The euro rose 0.4% to $1.1681, while sterling last traded at $1.3488, up 0.6%.
The European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to meet this week and is likely to keep interest rates unchanged after a series of cuts, while investors are watching to see if the US Federal Reserve (FED) will bow to pressure from Donald Trump to lower interest rates.
The Fed is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at its July meeting. Traders are now pricing in a higher probability of a rate cut at its October meeting, while the probability of a second cut this year is still uncertain.
