This is a move by Malaysian football, to help their young players have more opportunities to compete in a professional environment, improve their professional skills and competition experience. This is something that Malaysian football applied more than 15 years ago. At that time, the Malaysian national team participated in this water polo championship in the 2007-2008 season (ranked 8th) and 2009 (champion). Later, the Malaysian team even participated in the Singapore championship in 2012, to increase the number of matches.
Also during this period, the Malaysian team won the AFF Cup 2010, and the SEA Games in 2009 and 2011. Now, with the establishment of the U.22 Malaysia team to participate in the 2025-2026 season, FAM does not hide its ambition to win the gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games, taking place in December this year.
Stop the national championship during the SEA Games
In addition to allowing the U.22 Malaysia team to participate in the national championship, FAM also has another important decision, which is the decision to temporarily suspend the domestic championship, during the SEA Games. Malaysia will be the next football country in Southeast Asia, after Vietnam and Indonesia, to decide to temporarily suspend the national football championship, to help the U.22 players focus on the task of winning the gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games .

After Vietnamese football stopped the national championship during the AFF Cup last year and was successful, football teams in the region carefully studied this method of the V-League, before applying it to their domestic leagues.
At the 32nd SEA Games in 2023, taking place in Cambodia, the Malaysian youth team was in the same group with the Vietnamese team of the same age. At that time, the Malaysian U.22 team lost 1-2 to the Vietnamese U.22 team and was eliminated after the group stage. This year, Malaysia is determined to innovate the way it prepares for its U.22 team, determined to change its performance compared to the last SEA Games.
