The most promising candidate for the Indonesian national team coach position

After parting ways with Patrick Kluivert after just nine months, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) is rushing to find a new captain for the national team.

With his experience in Asia, Jesús Casas is the leading candidate.

In the shortlist of 5 candidates, Jesús Casas emerged as the brightest name thanks to his experience working in Asia, modern playing style and suitability with Indonesia's naturalization strategy.

The Spanish coach once led Iraq to win the 2023 Gulf Cup, helping the West Asian team end its title drought after 42 years. He was also an assistant to Luis Enrique at the Spanish national team and Barcelona B.

Earlier this month, PSSI President Erick Thohir stressed that the Indonesian team needs a coach who understands Asian football, knows how to integrate naturalized players and build a long-term foundation.

Mr Thohir revealed that PSSI had interviewed candidates from Europe, Asia and possibly Africa, focusing on coaches with international experience and the ability to work with multicultural players. Coach Casas led the race and was the most highly rated candidate.

Although PSSI will consider further before making a decision, Federation President and Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir is under great pressure to soon find a new, suitable foreign coach for the team.

The failure in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers not only led to Kluivert’s departure but also sparked criticism from fans and experts, with many saying that PSSI was wrong to fire Shin Tae-yong – the coach who led Indonesia to the third qualifying round for the first time in history.

PSSI plans to conduct a face-to-face interview and wants to announce the new coach of the Indonesian team this month. In the latest case, the Indonesian team will have to wait until early December to know the name of the new coach.
