USAID continues to address war legacy issues in Vietnam

On the afternoon of March 10, 2023, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received Ms. Samantha Power, Director General of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

At the meeting, Minister Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated the significance of Director General Samantha Power's visit, one of the opening activities on the occasion of the two countries celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Comprehensive Partnership (2013-2023).

Expressing his gratitude for the effective coordination between USAID and Ms. Samantha Power personally with relevant ministries and sectors of Vietnam, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Minister expressed his delight at the strong development of the Vietnam - US relationship, including the important contribution of USAID to Vietnam's socio -economic development through development assistance projects in the fields of overcoming the consequences of war, health, education, improving governance capacity for localities and businesses, etc.

Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son received Ms. Samantha Power, Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Projects implemented by USAID in Vietnam vividly demonstrate the increasingly effective and substantive development of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership on the basis of respect for each other's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political institutions, in accordance with the interests of the people of the two countries, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region as well as in the world.

Ms. Samantha Power expressed her good impression of the country and people of Vietnam, thanking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Minister Bui Thanh Son personally for effectively supporting the implementation of USAID's activities in Vietnam.

She was pleased to say that she was able to directly visit and witness the achievements of ongoing USAID projects, including attending the Handover Ceremony for the return of dioxin-treated site in the Southwest area of ​​Bien Hoa Airport on March 7, 2023. Ms. Samantha Power said that USAID will continue to focus on addressing war legacy issues including dioxin remediation at Bien Hoa Airport, improving DNA identification capacity for Vietnamese scientists to search for and identify the remains of Vietnamese soldiers, improving health and social services to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities, supporting Vietnam in mitigating the impact of climate change, sustainable development, human resource development, health infrastructure development, and responding to infectious diseases.
