- Realizing the initial effectiveness of African swine fever (ASF) vaccination, all levels, sectors and localities in the province are actively promoting and encouraging local people to proactively vaccinate their pigs to prevent the disease.

The ASF outbreak in the province since the beginning of 2024 has caused heavy losses to farmers. By the end of July, the whole province had about 12,000 pigs dead and destroyed with a total weight of over 525.5 tons. To prevent and control ASF, currently, ASF vaccination is still the most effective measure.
Proactive government, active people
Nhat Hoa is one of the first three communes in Bac Son district to carry out mass vaccination against ASF at the end of June 2024. The whole commune has nearly 500 pigs eligible for vaccination. According to Mr. Duong Huu Sam, Party Secretary and Chairman of Nhat Hoa Commune People's Committee, when the district selected the commune to pilot ASF vaccination on a large scale, the commune's Party Committee, government and people were very supportive because this is the most practical measure to protect livestock. On June 25 and 26, staff from the district's Agricultural Service Center vaccinated ASF to pigs in the villages. Since vaccination, the pigs have developed normally and healthily, and no pigs have died from ASF.
According to the recommendations of the professional agency when using AVC ASF LIVE DTLCP vaccine, only inject 1 single dose for healthy pigs from 4 weeks of age or older (Do not inject vaccine for gilts, sows and boars). After 2 to 4 weeks of vaccination, pigs are immune to DTLCP virus, the immunity lasts at least 5 months. |
According to Mr. Duong Van Linh, Deputy Director of the Bac Son District Agricultural Service Center, realizing the effectiveness of vaccination in preventing and controlling ASF, people have actively registered for vaccination recently, especially many households have spent their own money to buy vaccines for their pigs. From the end of June 2024 to now, the district has had 12,000/15,000 pigs in 18 communes and towns vaccinated against ASF, of which 3,700 pigs were self-funded.
In Binh Gia district, from the beginning of 2024 to the end of July 2024, the district had nearly 1,100 pigs infected with the disease and forced to be destroyed with a total weight of over 42 tons. Thanks to the promotion of propaganda and mobilization of people in vaccination to prevent ASF, farmers' awareness has been raised, and they have proactively registered to vaccinate their pigs against ASF. Along with about 4,900 doses of vaccine funded by the Provincial People's Committee, farmers have also spent their own money to buy more than 1,000 doses to vaccinate their pigs.
Ms. Vu Thi Hoa, Binh Gia town, Binh Gia district shared: Last September, my family had 4 pigs die from ASF. This year, I continue to raise 4 more pigs but I am still very worried that the pigs will be infected with ASF. When I saw the town People's Committee promoting ASF vaccination for pigs, I immediately registered. Last July, my family's pigs were vaccinated against ASF, and now the pigs are healthy, I am very reassured.

Vaccination, a "shield" to prevent DTLCP disease
Faced with the complicated developments of ASF, implementing Notice No. 383/TB-UBND dated July 8, 2024 announcing the conclusion of Comrade Luong Trong Quynh, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee at the 3-level online conference on urgent implementation of ASF prevention and control tasks, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has directed the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine to coordinate with districts and cities to review, develop plans and deploy ASF vaccination for pig herds. The Provincial People's Committee has provided funding support for localities to implement the project simultaneously from July 22 to 28, 2024.
Through screening, in July 2024, the whole province had about 50,000 pigs eligible for vaccination. Immediately after receiving 55,360 doses of Avac ASF Live DTLCP vaccine, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine allocated vaccines to 10/11 districts and cities (Loc Binh district alone used the reserve budget to purchase vaccines) to deploy large-scale vaccination.
Mr. Nguyen Nam Hung, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, said: In the current situation of ASF, ASF vaccination is the most effective "shield" to prevent ASF. Immediately after the vaccine was available, by the end of July we had vaccinated nearly 44,000 pigs, reaching over 88% of the total number of pigs to be vaccinated. Along with about 9,000 doses of vaccine purchased by people, since the beginning of the year, the whole province has vaccinated 52,000 pigs against ASF. Through monitoring the pig herd after vaccination, the rate of pigs dying due to reactions to the drug is very low, only 0.039%, mainly those that have latent ASF virus.
Currently, the herd of pigs vaccinated against ASF is basically growing well and has antibodies against the ASF virus. Thanks to that, the ASF situation in the area is relatively stable, with a downward trend, and no new communes have outbreaks of the disease.
According to statistics from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, from the beginning of August until now, the disease has only occurred in 205 households, the number of dead and destroyed pigs is 930 with a weight of over 34.3 tons. Currently, in the province, 74/154 communes have gone 21 days without an outbreak.
Mr. Vi Van Thang, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Loc Binh district, said: Through screening, there are 3,745 pigs in the district that need to be vaccinated. We have deployed mass vaccination in communes and towns from July 11 to 19. Up to now, the pigs vaccinated against ASF have antibodies against ASF virus, the herd is developing stably, the ASF situation has basically decreased compared to before, from the beginning of August until now, there have been no ASF outbreaks in the area.
Although the vaccinated pigs have antibodies against the ASF virus, because the vaccine has not yet covered the entire herd, including about 36,000 commercial pigs ready for sale and 9,000 breeding pigs, the risk of disease outbreaks can still arise and spread.
In the coming time, the People's Committees of districts and cities will continue to direct the People's Committees of communes, wards and towns to effectively implement disease prevention and control measures according to regulations, while promoting propaganda for livestock farmers to apply biosafety measures. At the same time, it is recommended that livestock farmers proactively vaccinate when restocking, especially DTLCP vaccine to create an effective "shield" to prevent epidemics, contributing to reducing losses for livestock farmers.
