Preservation and exploitation of cultural heritage values
Nestled at the foot of Mo Vo mountain in Doan Ket village, Ngoi A commune, Van Yen district, the small house of Mrs. Hoang Thi Quan is always bustling with the sounds of Then dances and songs. For Mrs. Quan and the Tay Ngoi A people, Then is not only a folk religious activity but also their heart and life. The Then words blending in the dance with the sound of rattles, sometimes slow, sometimes fast, will bring Mrs. Then and Mr. Then to "Muong Troi" to pray to the gods to save people.
With nearly 40 years of dedication to Then melodies, Ms. Hoang Thi Quan is known by the locals as a famous "Then teacher" in the region because she has mastered many ancient Then songs and dances. Therefore, Ms. Quan's house is often a place for people to gather to practice and perform during holidays, New Year's or important events of the Tay people in this region such as: Then worshiping rituals, worshiping gods, worshiping ancestors, going to the fields festival, celebrating new rice, celebrating new house... and cultural activities of the Tay people.
Although she is 85 years old, her love for Then melodies has helped Ms. Quan stay flexible and healthy to practice dancing and singing with her children and grandchildren and members of the commune's art club. It is also from these sessions that the Then singing and Then dancing movement of the Tay people in Ngoi A commune has received more attention than before, maintained regular activities and attracted a large number of tourists to experience. Ms. Quan shared: "I think that teaching and spreading the love of folk songs to everyone is the responsibility of an artist to pass on the good cultural values of the nation to the future generations of their ethnic community to preserve the culture from fading away."
Although we do not speak the same language, the songs and hospitality of the people of Ngoi A commune impressed Mr. Michel Olier - a tourist from Canada. Mr. Michel Olier excitedly said: "After searching for information online, I decided to choose this place as a stop to experience the life and learn about the culture of the ethnic minorities in Yen Bai . Although the daily activities are strange, the people here are very friendly and open. I found it very interesting to eat the dishes of the Tay people, to watch and sing and dance with the people. I really like it!"
