Due to work reasons, it was not until April 18 that Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tan (living in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City) was able to go online to find a room in the Da Nang and Hoi An areas for a family trip during the holiday. "I was worried that with only 12 days left until the holiday, booking close to the date would cause prices to skyrocket like previous years. But I was very surprised when room prices at many hotels in Hoi An and Da Nang dropped sharply," said Mr. Tan.

Choosing a two-bedroom garden-view villa at a 4-star coastal resort, about 4km from the center of Hoi An, Mr. Tan was surprised when the price on the online hotel room sales page was reduced by 56%, from about 10.4 million VND to nearly 4.6 million VND for 2 nights on April 29 and May 1. "I have stayed at this resort before, the service quality is quite good, the scale is moderate, not too large like other coastal resorts but the space is comfortable, just a few steps from the sea... Surprised because the price was so cheap, I called the hotel to verify and learned that if guests booked directly, it would be even cheaper, the price per night was only 1.4 million VND, a total of 2.8 million for two nights," said Mr. Tan.

Also at this resort, the price of a double room with garden view is reduced from 3.2 million to 1.5 million for the night of April 29; the beachfront villa is reduced from 7.1 million to 3.4 million VND, equivalent to a 52% discount.

On May 1 and 2, room rates in Hoi An also dropped. For example, beach villas at a 5-star resort in Cua Dai were reduced by 30%; riverside villas in Cam Nam were reduced by 35%... In addition, many mid-range hotels in Hoi An city also reduced prices by 50% or more. A 3-star hotel in Cam Pho has rooms from 3.5 million for 2 nights reduced to 1.6 million; rooms from 3.6 million are reduced to 1.6 million...

In Da Nang, 3-star hotels near My Khe beach have even more drastic discounts, up to 83%, from about 2.6 million for the night of April 30 to 442,000 VND; rooms priced at 2.7 million are reduced to 459,000 VND... Other hotels have discounts of more than 70%, from 3.2 million to 669,000 VND; 3 million to 900,000 VND/night during the holiday...

Luxury resorts along the coast of Da Nang also offer discounts of 25-35% from April 29 to May 3 on online room booking sites.

Surplus hotel rooms?

According to statistics, Da Nang has nearly 1,000 hotels, with about 40,000 rooms. Of which, there are about 795 hotels under 2 stars, accounting for 84% of the number of hotels in the area, but the room occupancy rate only reached less than 40% of the time before the pandemic - in 2019. At the peak of domestic and foreign tourists, the occupancy rate of tourist accommodation rooms in Da Nang also only reached 50%.

Hoi An has fewer hotels, around 11,000 rooms, but because of its geographical location right next to Da Nang, the number of rooms has been shared. Therefore, in case Da Nang has a hotel room surplus crisis, Hoi An will also fall into a similar situation.

Many hotels in Hoi An reduce room rates during the April 30 holiday

Mr. Truong Duc Hai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hon Ngoc Vien Dong Tourism Company, said that hotels and resorts in Da Nang and Hoi An are in a "starving" period for both international and domestic visitors. Before the pandemic, these two destinations depended on the Chinese and Korean tourist markets. Now Korean visitors have returned but are not enough to make up for the shortage of Chinese visitors. Chinese visitors have been "opened" under a pilot tour program to Vietnam since March 15, but the number is still scattered, there are no individual visitors. Da Nang also had expectations for Indian visitors but has certainly been "disappointed" by the small number.

"In addition, domestic tourists are still afraid of traveling domestically during the holidays for two reasons: crowds and rising prices, from airfares to accommodation," said Mr. Hai. According to Mr. Hai, along with the crisis of excess hotel rooms, these are the reasons why accommodation prices in Da Nang and Hoi An have dropped dramatically during this holiday season.

A recent report by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on the seat capacity of domestic airlines during the upcoming 5-day holiday shows that the Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang route is quite low, reaching 62% on April 28, 72.54% on April 29; in the opposite direction, Da Nang - Ho Chi Minh City on May 2 reached 55.98%, on May 3 reached 42.66%. The Hanoi - Da Nang route and vice versa has a better seat capacity but not as high as other key domestic routes.
