Specifically, Nguyen Thanh Duy made a breakthrough in the men's 65 kg clean and jerk category. After three attempts, the 16-year-old weightlifter successfully lifted 156 kg in the clean and jerk category to take the lead. In the snatch category, despite great efforts, the Vietnamese representative could only lift 120 kg, placing fourth in this category.
In total, Thanh Duy's total lift was 276 kg. This was the highest score in the final and also broke the Games record in this weight class. However, he was only recognized with a gold medal for the clean and jerk event, not the total lift. This was also the first gold medal of the Vietnamese sports delegation at the Games.
This comes from the competition format at the Asian Youth Games. Unlike the Olympics or ASIAD, the organizers award separate medals for the snatch and clean and jerk events, not the total. Therefore, despite his high total score and record-breaking record, Thanh Duy only won a gold medal in the clean and jerk event. His 276 kg mark is considered more of an impressive number than a total medal.
The 2025 Asian Youth Games, which brings together more than 30 countries and territories, will compete in many Olympic sports, and is an important playground to evaluate and discover young talents of the continent before the Youth Olympics. As of October 27, the Vietnamese sports delegation won 1 gold medal, 5 silver medals and 6 bronze medals, ranking 19th in the overall rankings.
