(ABO) Hometown is not only a place to remember and love, but also a place for children born and raised in the city like me to return to. I am so happy to have been able to return to my paternal hometown (Cai Be district, Tien Giang province) for nearly two months, to experience part of the peaceful life of the people here.

Coming back to my hometown, I felt so different from the city, feeling the simplicity, gentleness, and hospitality of the people in the river area. In my hometown, the village love and neighborliness always blend with the beauty of the peaceful Mekong Delta. Those images have entered my heart, forever a beautiful and unforgettable memory.

Along the dike road in My Duc Dong commune, on both sides of the road are lush and immense fruit gardens, mostly durian and Thai jackfruit. Newly built, spacious houses are located along the peaceful canal banks, reflecting on the water. In the distance are golden rice fields, heavy with grain. Flocks of white storks fly in the distance at sunset, beautiful and peaceful to the point of being mesmerizing.

Going deeper into the fields is a system of canals and streams crisscrossed with precarious monkey bridges, sampans sailing up and down the muddy alluvial-colored water. Flocks of ducks are swimming, bathing and looking for food; clumps of water hyacinths with purple flowers drift lazily on the calm canal.

The sound of roosters crowing at noon, the chirping of birds on bamboo branches, the sound of bitterns in the afternoon with the high and low tides; the loud croaking of frogs mixed with the sound of insects sound like a symphony of music in the night after the drizzling rain outside..., all seem to paint a picture of the countryside, peaceful, smooth and captivating.

One afternoon, I followed the country road and accidentally met an old man in his sixties, holding a string of bamboo slats in his hand, barefoot, puffing on a pipe. I smiled and nodded to him, and he waved back, smiling as if we had always been close. Knowing that I had just returned from the city to visit my hometown, he invited me to follow him to see how bamboo slats were made. Going with him, I understood how people made bamboo slats, and what bait they used to put in them to attract fish and shrimp to eat them… After that, he invited me to his house to visit, because “at first we are strangers, but later we become friends”.

Being able to return to my hometown and experience life in my hometown, I realized that hometown is always the sweetest and warmest word, making my heart always ache to return after the fatigue of life. Returning to the arms of my family, living in my beloved hometown is always a great fortune for those who are far from home like me.

Because only by going far away can we cherish the day of return, see all the beauty of our homeland, and feel the love of our motherland. Tomorrow, I will return to the city to continue my life in the city. The image of my homeland will forever be imprinted in my heart. And I will return to my homeland in the nearest future…
