Video of earthquake in China, nearly 100 people died

(CLO) Rescuers are braving freezing temperatures to dig through rubble in the search and rescue of survivors after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook a county in China's Tibet Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning (January 7).


As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, Chinese authorities confirmed a total of 95 people had died and 130 others were injured after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County, Shigatse Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, China at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the district's Tsogo town, which has a population of about 6,900 and is located within a 20-kilometer radius, including about 27 villages. Dingri District Chief Tashi Dondrup told Xinhua that the earthquake was clearly felt in the district.

The epicenter was in Dingri's Tsogo town. The magnitude 6.8 earthquake was the strongest recorded in the county in five years. The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

According to the weather forecast from China's National Meteorological Center, the temperature in Dingli County on Tuesday will range from minus 18 degrees Celsius to 0 degrees Celsius.

Official data shows that Dingri County has a population of more than 60,000, and about 6,900 people live within a 20-kilometer radius of the epicenter. A preliminary survey found that more than 1,000 homes suffered varying degrees of damage, some of which were reduced to rubble.

The first rescue team began work immediately upon arriving in Dingri County, China’s fire department said, adding that thousands of local firefighters and rescue workers have been dispatched to the affected areas.
