TPO - British University Vietnam has recently achieved the prestigious EDGE green certificate, along with many large-scale green buildings around the world.
British University Vietnam (BUV) has officially become the first university in Vietnam to achieve the EDGE Advanced certification, equivalent to level 2 of 3 certification levels. According to global standards, to achieve the EDGE Advanced certification, buildings must ensure on-site energy savings of 40% or more, double the basic level 1 - EDGE Certified.
BUV receives green certification from EDGE |
EDGE's assessment recorded a 41% reduction in energy consumption at BUV, 22% water savings, and a reduction in embodied energy in materials of up to 37%.
To receive the EDGE Advanced certification, BUV has implemented many effective energy management solutions right from the initial design concept to implementation. The school's master plan harmoniously combines construction elements (only at less than 20%) - regulating lakes - green areas to establish an activity space that makes the most of natural energy. The honeycomb mesh design allows natural light to penetrate common living spaces, while also acting as a natural air conditioner, providing fresh air while saving about 20% of electricity used. In common living areas, the school takes advantage of natural air by using ceiling fans instead of air conditioners.
The shading design for the hot sides of the building facing west and east is also carefully considered to provide effective insulation. In addition, the lighting system at BUV uses all LED lights, saving 75% of energy compared to conventional incandescent lights.
The school reduces approximately 196.27 tons of CO₂ emissions into the environment each year according to EDGE, equivalent to a reduction of nearly 53% of total emissions for the entire year. BUV is planning to install solar panels by 2026 to increase sustainable energy over the next 25 years.
BUV's entire water system is designed to circulate, effectively distributing water for high to low needs such as drinking water, domestic water, sanitation, irrigation, minimizing waste while ensuring absolute hygiene. BUV's wastewater and waste treatment system ensures minimal waste and chemical discharge into the environment.
The EDGE certificate was created by IFC (International Finance Corporation) - a member of the World Bank Group. This certificate assesses the level of sustainable development of buildings through many indicators related to construction or energy use. The EDGE certificate is especially supported by the British government, applied in 170 countries, especially in Asia.
