The stories of Mr. G. and Mrs. Q., two patients from different countries, deeply reflect the tireless efforts of Vietnamese doctors and medical staff in bringing life and hope to people living far away from home.
Vietnam is not only a country of great tourist destinations but also a place that offers hopeful medical treatment opportunities to patients from all countries. |
Mr. G., a 49-year-old man from Burundi, had been living in dull pain for two months with pain in his lower back.
When he went to a hospital in Burundi for a check-up, he discovered that he had large kidney stones on both sides. However, he realized that treatment options in his homeland were limited and worried about the dangerous complications that could arise if he did not receive timely treatment.
"With the hope of finding a better solution, I decided to come to Vietnam, where the healthcare system is developed and treatment costs are reasonable," Mr. G. shared.
On the 9,000 km journey from the capital Bujumbura (Burundi) to Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. G. not only carried physical pain but also questions about an uncertain future.
But when he arrived at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, he felt the warmth and hospitality of the medical staff. The doctors there quickly conducted tests, CT scans and provided appropriate treatment plans.
The results showed that Mr. G. had large kidney stones measuring 20-25mm in the left kidney and 20mm in the right kidney. Doctor Tran Huy Phuoc, Center for Urology - Nephrology - Andrology shared that with this condition, if not intervened promptly, the patient may experience serious complications such as hydronephrosis and kidney failure.
Therefore, the doctor decided to perform two lithotripsy surgeries using the retrograde endoscopic method, using laser energy to break the stones into small pieces, helping them to be excreted through the urinary tract.
After the first surgery in May, Mr. G. no longer felt pain and his health recovered quickly. He was discharged from the hospital after only 24 hours and confidently began his journey to discover the beauty of Southern Vietnam.
"The medical service here is great. The doctors are very professional and easily communicate with me in English. This has helped me a lot in understanding my condition," Mr. G. shared with gratitude.
With his health stable, Mr. G. continued his trip to famous places such as Independence Palace, Military Museum, and Phu Quoc. He also decided to return to Vietnam to continue surgery on his remaining kidney.
"I feel very grateful to the doctors and nurses here. They not only treated me but also helped me have memorable experiences in a wonderful country like Vietnam," he shared.
Ms. Q., 50 years old, has had a difficult and hopeful journey with late-stage stomach cancer. After being diagnosed at the hospital, she discovered that she not only had stomach cancer but also had metastases to her peritoneum, lungs and ovaries. Although she was treated in the US, Ms. Quyen was still worried about the high cost and the long distance between treatments.
"While in pain and fear, I was advised by a doctor in the US to return to Vietnam, where they can provide treatment regimens equivalent to those in the US but at much more reasonable costs," Ms. Q. shared with tears in her eyes.
The decision to return to Vietnam was a touching one, because in addition to treatment, she also wanted to be close to her family during these difficult days.
At Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, the team of doctors performed a treatment regimen combining immunotherapy and chemotherapy, along with placing a duodenal stent to help her eat better. After three treatment sessions, the symptoms of abdominal pain and nausea gradually decreased, she was able to eat soft foods and felt much more relieved.
The CT scan results showed that the tumor had not grown further and had decreased in size. This was not only a welcome result for Ms. Quyen but also a clear demonstration of the remarkable progress in cancer treatment in Vietnam.
"The combination of doctors in the US and in Vietnam has helped me feel much more secure. We always communicate and update continuously about my condition, which helps me feel that I am not alone in the fight against cancer," said Ms. Q.
The Central Dermatology Hospital is the leading dermatology clinic in Vietnam, standing out not only for its specialized treatment services but also for its special attention to international patients.
MSc. Dr. Nguyen Doan Tuan, Department of Skin Disease Treatment for Women and Children (Central Dermatology Hospital) said that one of the main reasons why international patients choose Vietnam is because the waiting time for medical examination in other countries is very long, sometimes having to wait for several months for an appointment. In addition, many patients treated at foreign hospitals do not see progress, causing them to decide to return to their homeland for treatment.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Le Huu Doanh, Director of the Central Dermatology Hospital, international experts also highly appreciate Vietnam's beauty services and techniques, considering them as approaching international standards. The quality of service along with reasonable costs has attracted many foreigners to Vietnam for beauty treatments, affirming the position of Vietnam's medical industry in the world.
The trend of international patients coming to Vietnam is not limited to the field of dermatology. At leading hospitals such as the 108 Military Central Hospital, Bach Mai Hospital and Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, the number of foreign patients coming for treatment is increasing.
Ms. NTNA, 30 years old, an overseas Vietnamese living in New Zealand, is a typical example. After giving birth to her first child in New Zealand, she encountered serious problems with her perineum and sphincter, and had to undergo three unsuccessful surgeries.
Confused and worried, she decided to return to Vietnam for treatment. She had surgery at the Colorectal - Perineal Surgery Center (Viet Duc Friendship Hospital), and only 10 days after surgery, she was able to leave the hospital, her health recovered quickly. Her family was extremely excited about the treatment results and sent their thanks to the hospital's doctors.
Dr. Le Nhat Huy, Deputy Director of the Colorectal and Perineal Surgery Center, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, shared that over the past year, the center has treated many foreign patients, especially those from countries such as Poland, Hungary, Japan and the UK.
These patients often experience relapse or failure to recover after multiple treatments in developed countries. However, in Vietnam, they have been successfully treated and feel more secure being cared for by relatives in a familiar environment with reasonable procedures and costs.
Every year, hundreds of foreign couples and Vietnamese from other countries also come to Vietnam to treat infertility. Vietnam is currently emerging as an ideal destination in the field of in vitro fertilization (IVF) with reasonable costs and high success rates.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh, Director of the Central Maternity Hospital, said that Vietnam has achieved many successes in fetal echocardiography and early detection of fetal malformations. Vietnam's prenatal screening field has also made significant progress.
Not only that, doctors at Saint Paul General Hospital (Hanoi) have just successfully operated on an Australian child with a choledochal cyst using a single-hole laparoscopic surgery, showing that Vietnam's medical technology is not inferior to that of developed countries.
The above stories all show the similarities in the treatment process and the strong development of the Vietnamese healthcare system. Vietnamese healthcare is not only a place where international patients come to because of the quality of medical care, but also because of the reasonable treatment costs compared to developed countries such as the US and Singapore. The strong development of domestic hospitals has contributed significantly to improving the quality of medical services.
Dr. Duong Huy Luong, Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health), said that in recent years, medical facilities in Vietnam have significantly improved in service quality, focusing on patients. The government is encouraging public and private hospitals to develop into specialized medical centers that meet regional and international standards.
These efforts have helped Vietnamese healthcare not only serve the needs of domestic people well but also become the choice of many international patients, an ideal destination for those looking for quality medical care at reasonable costs.
Vietnam's healthcare system has been affirming its position on the international medical map, bringing life, hope and new rays of light to patients not only domestically but also around the world.
Vietnam is not only a country of great tourist destinations but also a place that offers hopeful medical treatment opportunities to patients from all countries.
And on the journey to regain health, many people have chosen Vietnam, because here, they find not only professionalism, but also humanity and dedicated care, helping them to overcome illness strongly.
