At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the afternoon of April 10, answering a reporter's question about US President Donald Trump's announcement to temporarily suspend reciprocal tariffs for 90 days against more than 70 countries, including Vietnam, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said:

“Vietnam welcomes the US Government’s decision to suspend tariffs for 90 days, considering this a positive step that contributes to easing global trade tensions. As the two countries are about to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Vietnam wishes to work with the US to promote trade negotiations on the basis of equality and mutual respect, towards a balanced, effective and sustainable economic relationship.”

Ms. Hang also said that 2025 marks an important milestone in Vietnam-US relations. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the two countries plan to organize many foreign affairs activities, including delegation exchanges at all levels, seminars, people-to-people exchanges and cultural events to enhance bilateral understanding and cooperation.

Earlier, on April 9, US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension of reciprocal tariffs on more than 70 trading partner countries, including Vietnam. He said the decision was made after the countries proactively contacted the US to negotiate trade and pledged not to retaliate.

On the same day, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. At the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam wishes to work with relevant US agencies to concretize the contents of the exchanges between the leaders of the two countries, thereby continuing to maintain stable and sustainable economic and trade relations, for the benefit of businesses and people of the two countries.

The US side agreed with Vietnam’s proposal to initiate negotiations on a reciprocal trade agreement, including tax agreements, and requested that technical levels of both sides immediately conduct exchanges. This is considered an opportunity for Vietnam and the US to promote economic relations in a more balanced and sustainable direction in the coming time.
