Overview of the meeting.

Speaking at the session, Ambassador, Head of the Vietnamese Mission to the United Nations Dang Hoang Giang expressed his deep gratitude to those who sacrificed and commemorated all victims of the war, while emphasizing the profound and lasting significance of the end of World War II for the international community and Vietnam.

At this very moment, the Vietnamese people carried out the great August Revolution, ending nearly a century of colonial and fascist domination, marking the historic turning point of Vietnam into an independent and democratic nation.

This historical event is a vivid testament to the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people in their steadfast pursuit of independence and freedom. Despite having to endure three decades of resistance after the end of World War II, the Vietnamese people were able to gain complete independence and unification for the country in 1975.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang affirmed that the historical lesson of World War II as well as of Vietnam is that no force can subdue the enduring desire for peace, the universal values of independence, freedom and national self-determination.

On this occasion, Vietnam calls on countries to strengthen multilateral cooperation, international solidarity, promote trust and uphold international law, especially the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter such as respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, non-use of force and settlement of disputes by peaceful means.

These are the important principles that have helped prevent a world war since 1945 and form the foundation of the United Nations. As an active and responsible member of the United Nations, Vietnam has always devoted itself to peacekeeping efforts, promoting cooperation and development, for a brighter future for future generations.
