To date, Vietnam has signed 17 Free Trade Agreements with more than 60 partners, most of which are large economies spanning all continents, accounting for nearly 90% of global GDP, making our country one of the world's top 20 countries in terms of international trade scale with high and stable growth rates and continuously achieving record trade surpluses.

With an import-export scale of nearly 800 billion USD, Vietnam is in the top 20 leading economies in terms of trade scale.
According to the General Department of Customs, the total value of Vietnam's import and export of goods in 2024 is estimated to reach 786 billion USD, an increase of 15.4%, equivalent to an increase of 105 billion USD compared to 2023. The trade balance continues to have a surplus for the 9th consecutive year with 24.7 billion USD.
In particular, Vietnam continues to be the leading country in Southeast Asia in terms of trade growth rate, surpassing many major economies in the region.
Vietnam has focused on developing its strong industries to increase export turnover. Key export items that have helped Vietnam achieve high growth include: Phones and components, computers, electronic products and components, textiles, agricultural products, seafood, coffee, cashew nuts and rice, which also play an important role in expanding export markets.
Diversifying export products helps Vietnam limit the risk of dependence on certain industries and improve its competitiveness in the international market.
Emphasizing the economic and trade growth at the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), General Secretary To Lam 's speech stated: " From a poor, backward country heavily devastated by war, besieged and isolated, Vietnam has now become a developing country with an upper-middle income, deeply integrated into world politics , the global economy, and human civilization, taking on many important international responsibilities, playing a proactive and active role in many important international organizations and multilateral forums ."
Independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity are maintained; national and ethnic interests are guaranteed. The size of the economy in 2024 will rank 32nd in the world and be among the top 20 economies in terms of trade and foreign investment attraction.
People's lives have improved significantly, the poverty rate has decreased sharply, now only 1.93% (according to multidimensional standards) compared to more than 60% in 1986. Economic, political, cultural, social, scientific-technological, national defense and security potentials have been constantly consolidated.
Foreign relations are expanded; the country's position and prestige are constantly enhanced.
To date, Vietnam has established diplomatic relations with 194 countries that are members of the United Nations; built cooperative relationships, strategic partnerships, and comprehensive strategic partnerships with all major powers in the world, including the United States, and 2025 is also the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-US diplomatic relations.
The growth momentum of merchandise trade remains strong in the first months of 2025, despite geopolitical fluctuations, trade barriers and tightening of commodity standards from many import markets.
As of mid-April 2025, the country's total export turnover of goods reached approximately 120 billion USD, up 10.5% over the same period last year. Import turnover reached 118.35 billion USD, up 16.68%.
With the results achieved in the first half of April, the total import-export turnover of the whole country from the beginning of the year to April 15 reached 237.97 billion USD, an increase of 13.5% over the same period, with a trade surplus of 1.27 billion USD.
In 2025, the Government targets domestic economic growth of over 8% and aims for double-digit growth in the next period. In particular, exports are identified as one of the three main growth drivers of the economy.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade predicts that in the coming time, export activities will face many difficulties due to the impact of tariffs from the US, and competition with many countries expanding and seeking new export markets will become more fierce.
At the 6th meeting on US reciprocal tariffs on April 29, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that thanks to the implementation of many solutions, Vietnam has achieved initial positive results in trade negotiations, but challenges remain. Therefore, the Prime Minister requested agencies to closely monitor and grasp the situation and respond promptly and proactively.
One of the specific solutions mentioned by the Prime Minister is that relevant ministries and agencies must soon negotiate and sign contracts to purchase and import goods from the US such as liquefied petroleum gas (LNG), aircraft, medicine, medical supplies, agricultural products, etc., to ensure sustainable trade balance.
Vietnam is also coordinating with ASEAN and regional countries to conduct negotiations to ensure harmony of interests, sustainable trade balance and commensurate with the ASEAN-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
