In the first 6 months of 2024, in addition to core business activities, securities trading activities also help many banks diversify revenue sources and minimize risks.
A survey of financial reports of listed banks shows that MB is a prominent unit with a profit of VND 1,412 billion from securities trading activities. In the first 6 months of the year, the other business activities of this unit were not outstanding, but thanks to the outstanding profit from securities trading, which was 8 times higher than the same period, in summary, MB's after-tax profit in the first 6 months of the year reached VND 10,726 billion, an increase of 5.28% over the same period in 2023.
Following are ACB and Techcombank with profits from securities trading activities of 155 billion VND and nearly 80 billion VND respectively.
Accordingly, ACB mainly invests in debt securities issued by domestic credit institutions, with an investment value of VND 4,000 billion as of the end of the second quarter of 2024, unchanged from the beginning of the year.
MB invests mainly in unlisted securities, accounting for 91% of total investment value.
At Techcombank , the value of investment in government bonds by the end of June 2024 was nearly VND 4,142.6 billion, 13.7 times higher than the same period . In contrast, the value of investment in bonds issued by other domestic credit institutions decreased by VND 4,131.2 billion.
However, besides the units recording large profits from securities trading activities, the two giants in the BIG4 group recorded not very positive results.
At VietinBank , by the end of June 2024, this bank recorded 63 billion VND in profit from trading securities, down 72.6% compared to the same period in 2023.
As for Vietcombank, despite investing more than VND2,400 billion in securities, its total profit was only VND22 billion, down 75% compared to the same period.
In the BIG4 group, only BIDV recorded an increase in profits from trading securities. The results for the first 6 months of the year reached VND246 billion. Accordingly, this bank increased its investment in trading securities in the first half of this year, to VND8,185 billion, of which 87% were debt securities.
