Excellently complete the tasks assigned by the Party and State

Congratulating and praising VIMC's outstanding efforts and achievements over the past 30 years, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc emphasized that the Second-class Labor Medal is a worthy recognition by the Party and State for VIMC's important contributions in the fields of maritime and logistics.

The Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that during the 30-year journey, the Corporation has gone through many difficult periods; testing the courage, determination, and spirit of overcoming difficulties of the leaders, cadres, workers, officers, and crew members of the Corporation. Difficulties and challenges come from the regional and global economic crisis, the prolonged recession of the shipping market, and internal limitations and shortcomings.

“There were times when the Corporation faced the risk of bankruptcy,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

Looking back over the past 30 years, it can be affirmed that Vietnam National Shipping Lines has successfully completed the tasks assigned by the Party and the State; both operating effectively and fulfilling the role of a key state-owned enterprise in developing the marine economy.

VIMC needs to implement well 5 key orientations

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the Government aims for 8% GDP growth by 2025 and double digits in the following years. In the strategy for sustainable marine economic development, the maritime industry is the spearhead and plays a key role.

Resolution 57-NQ/TW on scientific and technological breakthroughs, innovation and digital transformation also identifies this as a strategic driving force to enhance national competitiveness.

The Deputy Prime Minister also noted major challenges from international fluctuations, transportation costs, supply chain disruptions, climate change, etc.

In this new context and requirements, the Deputy Prime Minister requested that Vietnam National Shipping Lines continue to promote its 30-year tradition, constantly innovate, and well implement 5 key orientations.

The Corporation needs to be aware, determined and resolute in innovation, digital transformation, and green transformation in all business activities, from management and operations to each port operation, maritime transport and logistics service.

“Digital transformation is not only an inevitable trend, but also the key to breakthroughs and catching up with regional and world standards,” the Deputy Prime Minister noted.

The Deputy Prime Minister also suggested that the Corporation should focus resources on new investments, expanding the system of deep-water seaports and international transit ports in a modern direction; developing a large-tonnage shipping fleet, focusing on container transport.

“The Corporation needs to continue to perfect its modern corporate governance model, following advanced international practices, ensuring transparent, efficient operations with high competitiveness; promoting tradition and building a high-quality workforce with deep expertise and modern management skills; constantly learning and absorbing advanced management experiences in the world” (Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc).

It is necessary to improve production capacity and competitiveness through synchronous infrastructure investment to meet the increasing demand for goods transportation of the economy and reduce national logistics costs.

“Key infrastructure projects such as deep-water ports and international transit ports need to be implemented resolutely, ensuring progress and quality,” the Deputy Prime Minister stated.

In particular, VIMC needs to improve its competitiveness, develop services, expand its market, participate more deeply in the global supply chain; develop its business in both scale and business efficiency; maintain its role as a core state-owned enterprise in the Vietnamese maritime sector, and become a large maritime corporation in the region and the world.

Overcoming the waves, reaching far, entering the new era

At the ceremony, looking back at the development process of VIMC, Mr. Le Anh Son - Chairman of the Board of Members of VIMC emotionally concluded: "Thirty years, a journey that has not been smooth, with brilliant periods, but also many times when we had to dive into the depths of difficulty".

In the early days of its establishment, when it was still called Vinalines, the technical facilities were backward, the fleet was old and small in size, the road ahead was full of challenges, there was not even a dedicated port but only 6,900m of berth. Until the peak period in 2010, the fleet sometimes reached 159 ships, the total tonnage was nearly 3.5 million DWT and accounted for 45% of the total tonnage of the national fleet.

In particular, the Corporation had to face fierce challenges after the 2008 global economic crisis. VIMC seemed to be submerged in the market's fierce waves. By 2013, the Corporation's accumulated losses had reached more than 23,000 billion VND, and its debt had soared to 66,000 billion VND.

It was in the most difficult moments, with the spirit of solidarity, pride in the maritime profession and the belief that "tough waves cannot sink those who steer steadily", VIMC gradually rose up and grew stronger.

During that period, Mr. Son said, the Party, State and Government had timely directions and instructions like a lighthouse guiding the way in the dark night. Driven by the self-respect and resilient spirit of a seafarer, the leadership and all officers and employees of VIMC made efforts to find breakthrough solutions, unprecedented.

Specifically, the Corporation has boldly restructured comprehensively, focusing on three core areas: seaport exploitation, maritime transport and maritime services; at the same time, streamlining the apparatus, courageously cutting ineffective units and drastically innovating management and business methods.

VIMC has also vigorously applied modern management tools, defining the strategy of “customer-centric” and “human-centric” as the guiding principle in all decisions. Thanks to that, the ship VIMC has gradually emerged from the abyss of debt.

VIMC's equity has fully recovered, from negative VND7,000 billion to nearly VND17,000 billion. To date, VIMC has become a public enterprise with a capitalization value of over VND100,000 billion, owning the number 1 strategic seaport network system in Vietnam, the gateway connecting Vietnam to the global trade network.

“VIMC will definitely “Rise the waves, reach far, and enter a new era” with higher determination and more solid steps,” the captain of the VIMC ship affirmed.
