Short-necked mandarin ducks, also known as Phu Quy mandarin ducks, are raised in Chau Thon commune, Que Phong district and are a famous specialty of Nghe An . Nowadays, people raise specialty ducks to sell at high prices, which restaurants and hotels compete to buy, helping people get rich.
Short-necked duck, the most famous and delicious specialty of Nghe An
In Chau Thon commune, Que Phong district, Nghe An province, there is a famous breed of indigenous short-necked duck.
This is a duck breed with a round body and a short neck compared to other duck breeds. In the past, people here mainly raised short-necked round ducks for family use.
Especially to make delicious dishes to treat guests. Anyone who has ever enjoyed it once will remember the fragrant, delicious, sweet flavor of the short-necked duck meat. Many people after enjoying it want to buy it as a gift.
In recent years, people in Chau Thon commune have started raising short-necked ducks for commercial purposes to meet market demand.
Among them, Mr. Hoang Van Minh (in Na Ty hamlet, Chau Thon commune) is a household that raises short-necked ducks in large numbers, with high income, and many people come to learn.

To be proactive about breeding stock, Mr. Minh went to many households in the commune to buy short-necked ducks to raise. As the flock of ducks gradually increased in number, the number of eggs increased, so he created the short-necked duck breed right on the spot, by letting the hens incubate the eggs.
Thanks to that, Mr. Minh was proactive in breeding and started developing a flock of commercial ducks to supply the market.
Mr. Minh plans his duck farming area next to the terraced fields. Here, there is a pen area, a pond and an open space for grazing ducks. Mr. Minh's family raises two breeds of ducks, which are short-necked ducks and long-necked ducks. Of which, short-necked ducks account for 70% of the total flock, more than 500 laying ducks.
Mr. Hoang Van Minh said: "Short-necked ducks have delicious meat quality, moderate weight, easy to raise, and are less susceptible to disease. Short-necked ducks are also very popular in the market.
Many people want to buy them to enjoy but cannot because the local people only raise them in small quantities. So I thought about raising this breed of duck to both preserve the genetic source and produce products to supply to the market."

Duck feed is mainly banana tree trunks, chopped elephant grass, mixed with rice bran and corn. All roughage is home-made and locally available, so input costs are reduced while the quality of duck meat is guaranteed.
Restaurants and hotels compete to buy the specialty, people say they sell out as much as they can.
Short-necked ducks have a long growing period, weighing 2.2 kg/bird, smaller than long-necked ducks, but the meat quality is better, so the market favors it. Currently, Mr. Minh has more than 400 egg-laying ducks, selling nearly 1,000 commercial ducks each year.
This quantity is still not enough to meet the market demand. The main buyers are restaurants and hotels. The biggest buyers are Vinh city, Thai Hoa town, Nghia Dan district…

Currently, all of his family’s ducks and breeding ducks are produced from eggs laid by the family’s duck flock. The ducks only stay in the pond area, not grazed in the fields or streams.
The duck pen is built airy and clean. Mr. Minh pays great attention to disease prevention for the ducks. The water in the pond is changed continuously thanks to the pipe system that brings water from the source of the stream.
Therefore, the water is always clean and hygienic. Thanks to that, for more than 4 years, Minh’s family’s ducks have not had any disease outbreaks.
With a selling price of 120,000 VND/kg, many times higher than that of common duck breeds, each year Mr. Minh sells about 2 tons of short-necked ducks, earning over 200 million VND.
