The MacDonalds shaved 25 minutes off the previous record set at the 2019 London Marathon. In addition to making history, the couple also exceeded their fundraising goal of $8,000 for MitoCanada, a charity that supports and protects Canadians with mitochondrial disease.
This isn’t the first time the MacDonalds have set a world record at the Calgary Marathon. In 2017, Megan was part of the 10-person MitoCanada team that set the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon by a female team in 3 hours, 27 minutes, 58 seconds.
That same year, Rich was part of a team of 112 people that set a record for the largest number of people to complete a marathon together.
John Bird, interim CEO of Run Calgary, said the 2023 Calgary Marathon is not only a memorable race for the MacDonalds, but also a marathon event to build momentum after the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said more than 9,200 people completed the FM at the 2023 Calgary Marathon, raising more than $475,000 for charity and bringing the running community together in a grand celebration of health and fitness. Bird also thanked the more than 1,100 volunteers who helped runners reach their goals.
Lance Risseeuw won the men's race in 2 hours, 36 minutes and 4 seconds, while Maria Zambrano won the women's race in 2 hours, 48 minutes and 2 seconds. Both are from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
In addition to the marathon event attracting nearly 1,200 participants, the 2023 Calgary Marathon also features a variety of events including 50km, half marathon, 10km and 5km as well as a 1.2km distance for children to compete.
In total, 93 charities have benefited from donations collected through the 2023 Calgary Marathon, with $475,000 raised as part of the Servus Charity Challenge. The race has raised $9.7 million for charities over the past 12 years.
