A Chinese man was shocked when his wife caught him asking an AI to help his child with homework so he could play with his phone, even though she had assigned him the task.

A father in Shandong province, China let artificial intelligence (AI) guide his elementary school son with his homework.

On December 29, 2024, Ms. Jiang, the boy's mother, was extremely angry when she caught her husband assigning the responsibility of teaching his son's homework to AI while he played with his cell phone.

The husband panicked when his wife entered the room. The son told his mother that his father had asked him to use AI when he was having trouble with his homework.

The man uses the Kimi AI chatbot developed by Beijing-based Moonshot AI, which launched in October 2023.

The app is advertised as being able to handle 2 million Chinese characters with just one prompt.

The boy sent a picture of a question from his math exercise book and the AI chatbot responded by analyzing it and giving the result.

Ms. Jiang told Chinese media outlet Qilu Evening News that she trusted her husband and assigned him the task of tutoring her son, but unexpectedly, he "cheated" and continuously used AI without telling her.

This story has been spreading, creating opposing opinions. Some opinions defended the husband's way of doing things: "AI helps people learn faster than teachers. It can analyze questions more thoroughly and give appropriate and practical examples."

Some others disagreed: “If a child develops the habit of asking AI to solve every problem he encounters, he will never be able to think independently. This is not a good learning method for children who do not have self-control”; “AI is not always right”...

Some Chinese parents say they are also using AI to tutor their children. One father in Jiangsu province used a desktop camera to remotely monitor his primary school son’s homework, while using ChatGPT to analyze the questions and correct errors.

All he had to do was summarize the answers the AI provided and convey them to his son.

AI chatbots are seen as an effective way to ease the pressure on parents, who are often asked by teachers to tutor their children at home.

Many parents complain about the hardship of having to teach their children to do homework, combined with the heavy pressure of work at the company, making them very stressed. They accept the use of AI Chatbots to help their children stay competitive.

Other parents have suffered heart attacks, strokes and other serious conditions because of the stress of helping their children with homework.
