Continued writing of the first martial arts teacher's wishes

At 5 p.m., at the Bac Kan Province Sports Training and Competition Center, despite the hot sun, the shouts of the Taekwondo teachers and students still resounded loudly. Coach Mai Dinh Chung, with tanned skin and tall like a “giant” among the group of students, walked around, strictly correcting each movement.

Mr. Chung was born in 1992 in Bach Thong district. In 2007, at the age of 15, the dark-skinned, agile student was selected to study at the provincial Sports Training and Competition Center and fell in love with Taekwondo.

“The first years of practicing martial arts were also difficult, many difficult movements were painful and tiring. But I liked it, so I tried to do it at all costs. My first coach was Mr. Le Manh Cuong, who was both strict and friendly. The first year away from home, I stayed at the Center, he was like a second father, teaching, encouraging, and talking. At that time, almost only those who were recruited like us studied martial arts. So he still worried, hoping that children in the province could access and know more about Taekwondo,” Mr. Chung shared.

From love to passion, in 2008, Chung was called up to the National Youth Taekwondo Team. Stepping into a larger environment, interacting with many other provinces, in 2016, Chung returned to work at the Bac Kan Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center, determined to continue the wishes of his old teacher. Coach Mai Dinh Chung's first class was with 4 students, free of charge and only practiced after school hours.

Mr. Chung recalls: It was called a class for fun, but that time the Center had a plan to teach martial arts to students at schools. After that short course, I saw that 4 students had talent and loved martial arts, so I suggested to their parents to let them continue practicing. The children loved martial arts so much that they were very diligent, practicing after school hours. In 2016, there was a National Taekwondo Championship for students in the Northern region. I took the 3 of them to compete, and surprisingly, they won a set of Gold - Silver - Bronze medals. After that, I opened the first summer martial arts class with more than 40 students registered. The following classes gradually had more students...

In the summer of 2023, Mr. Chung opened 2 Taekwondo classes in Bac Kan city with more than 100 students. He said that many students initially liked martial arts, but then could not persevere. That is why all classes offer 8 trial sessions, then start charging tuition of 300,000 VND/month. For students with special difficulties, Coach Mai Dinh Chung is willing to support them, as long as they truly love Taekwondo.

The glory of the student is the happiness of the teacher.

One afternoon in a martial arts class, I clearly felt the enthusiasm and passion of this instructor. The class had nearly 60 students, both boys and girls, aged 5-17.

During class, sometimes some new students run around, some even "sulk" and refuse to practice... "The students still tease each other, fight, they are children, I have to stand up and be the "judge". During class, we have to focus because if we are distracted, the children will run outside to play"... Now that I have someone to support me, I am less stressed than before. The psychology of parents who send their children here is that they all want their children to practice health, be more disciplined and active. I am excited because many children come to martial arts early, from there finding promising faces to nurture".

From those classes, many children with martial arts talent were discovered by Coach Mai Dinh Chung. Typical examples are the twin brothers: Nguyen Thien An and Nguyen Minh Vuong in Bac Kan city. Studying Taekwondo since they were 5 years old, after nearly 6 years of accompanying Coach Mai Dinh Chung, the two children have won 08 Gold Medals in national and regional competitions.

Coach Mai Dinh Chung is the one who discovers the strengths of each student. Before competing, he studies tactics and learns about his opponents to help them score more points and achieve high results.

From 2022 to present, Coach Mai Dinh Chung and his students have participated in 06 national and regional tournaments. Of which, there are 2 grassroots tournaments, in which he and the parents have paid for their children to have the opportunity to compete and experience healthy sports . With those 06 tournaments, teachers and students have won a total of 10 Gold Medals; 9 Silver Medals and 6 Bronze Medals.

Sharing about his plans for the future, Coach Mai Dinh Chung said: "We are aiming for national high-performance sports tournaments. I hope to continue to accompany the children, thereby finding many children with sports qualities and a passion for martial arts. Not only me but also the athletes are eager to hear the three words "Bac Kan province" on the loudspeaker. I am extremely touched, happy and proud. That motivation urges us to pass on our passion for martial arts to our students, helping them to grow up day by day, and gain more achievements for the province's sports./.
