From early morning on May 11, the yard of Le Quy Don High School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City was bustling with the footsteps of junior high school students wearing floppy hats. They were like "young soldiers", gathering at the marching location.
These are 680 secondary school students from Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces who have been honored to be in the final round of the Le Quy Don Award for the 2024-2025 school year in the Red Scarf publication. The program is jointly organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training and Tuoi Tre newspaper.
Joy never forgotten
To take the final round exam, students will take two parts at two locations. At Le Quy Don High School, students will be given materials, read books, look at pictures and watch movies to complete part 1 of the exam. In part 2, with different requirements and tasks, students will visit Thong Nhat Hall.
Each student in the final round was given a "young soldier's handbook" which clearly stated the tasks that the "young soldier" had to complete during the Ho Chi Minh Campaign.
After understanding the mission, 680 "young soldiers" quickly searched for locations and had options to read, listen, watch, immerse themselves in the historical space, and enthusiastically take their exams.
Mai Ngoc Anh Thy - a 6th grade student at Tang Bat Ho Secondary School (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City) - said that after listening to the instructions for doing the test from the organizing committee and receiving the document "Ho Chi Minh Campaign" (supplement of Nhan Dan newspaper) distributed by the organizing committee, she went to consult other documents at the reading place, the exhibition of paintings about the campaign, watched "historical films" shown in the auditorium of Le Quy Don High School and then chose a corner to sit and do her test.
"My task is to use the knowledge I have learned, mainly math, literature, and English, to solve four test sections in the handbook given to me, including: The night before the general offensive, The rhythm of the march, Continuing the tradition of our ancestors, and Lingering emotions. Combining what the organizers gave me as well as the valuable documents I saw, read, and heard at the contest, I did the test quite quickly and left a lot of emotions behind," said Anh Thy.
An Chi - a student at Nguyen Thai Binh Secondary School (HCMC) - chose to read through the requirements in the "young soldier's handbook" and then choose which part to solve first. "For me, being a young soldier is a wonderful joy that I will never forget," An Chi shared.
After 70 minutes of taking the test at Le Quy Don High School, the "young soldiers" of middle school age passed part 1 of the test and headed straight to the Independence Palace to carry out the next tasks required by the test.
Add experience to gain profound lessons
Sharing about the requirement for students to transform into "young soldiers" in the final round of this year's award, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, head of the organizing committee - said: "The Le Quy Don Award wishes to foster patriotism; arouse pride in history, in the nation's tradition of resilient struggle; remind the young generation of the responsibility to the country; help the young generation appreciate more what they have and inspire dedication to society and the country".
According to Mr. Quoc, with those requirements, students will have experiences in the areas of "War Information", "Historical Films" and experience at the Independence Palace. From these rich and diverse experiences, students will apply reading comprehension skills, information filtering and processing skills, and the ability to apply learned knowledge to solve the requirements of the assignment, which here is to create a creative product.
To create this creative product, students must have extensive knowledge and the ability to apply it flexibly. In addition, through experiential activities, this year's Le Quy Don Award also has an important meaning in supplementing historical knowledge for students. Historical knowledge comes to them in a very natural and gentle way; thereby evoking spiritual values such as national pride, patriotism, respect for history...
Journalist Nguyen Khac Cuong - deputy editor-in-chief of Tuoi Tre newspaper, co-head of the organizing committee - added that the award hopes to bring students new experiences in examination formats and create a "play while learning" competition.
"The contest will help students deeply understand what they need to learn at school, in class, and how necessary that content will be in their daily life, work, and future life.
To be more specific, students will know what math is for, what literature is needed for... a series of practical problems will be solved thanks to what they have accumulated through years of hard work at school," said Mr. Cuong.

Comprehensive assessment of student abilities
The Le Quy Don Award on Khan Quang Do publication is a prestigious and valuable learning playground. Through diverse experiential activities, the Le Quy Don Award has made many important contributions to innovating teaching and learning closely linked to practice.
The exam questions in the award are often designed in an open way, stimulating the exploration and discovery of knowledge from the surrounding life. Students must think, analyze and apply that knowledge to solve specific situations.
This helps students develop the ability to connect theory and practice, an important element in innovative teaching methods.
Le Quy Don Prize also creates opportunities for students to study actively and proactively. Participating in the prize helps students form the habit of self-study and research, a necessary skill in the context of modern education. The prize is a form of testing and evaluating students' abilities comprehensively.
